Sergeant Major Nelson J. Hammer III

Sergeant Major Hammer is an native of Salt Lake City, Utah. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 1999, and attended Recruit Training at MCRD San Diego, CA.  He attended Marine Combat Training at Camp Pendleton, CA. and Supply Administrations School at Camp Johnson NC. 

In July 1999, Private Hammer reported to Seventh Communications Battalion, Okinawa, Japan for duty as a supply administrations clerk. Shortly after arriving at the command, he deployed to Thailand in support of Operation Cobra Gold.  While deployed, Private First Class Hammer was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.  During the deployment, Lance Corporal Hammer served as the Company clerk and supply purchase cardholder for the Company.  

In July 2002, Corporal Hammer reported to Headquarters Battalion Marine Corps Base Camp Foster Okinawa Japan. He served as a supply clerk and was promoted to Sergeant, where he served as the supply chief.  During this time, Sergeant Hammer attended Sergeants course.

In October 2004, Sergeant Hammer reported to Drill Instructor School, MCRD Parris Island. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in July 2005, and served as Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor for Charlie Company, First Recruit Training Battalion.  

In December 2008, Staff Sergeant Hammer reported to Headquarters Company Marine Corps Base Albany, GA. There he served as the Supply Chief and the SNCOIC of Corporals Course. After completing three Corporals courses, he was then moved up to the company as the company Gunnery Sergeant.  He was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant in April, 2009.  Gunnery Sergeant Hammer also served as the Company First Sergeant 

In January 2010, Gunnery Sergeant Hammer reported to Headquarters Battalion, MCAGCC Twentynine Palms, CA. where he served as a Supply Chief. During this time, he went TAD on an MTT to Tbilisi, Georgia for 45 days.  In April 2012, Gunnery Sergeant Hammer assumed the duties as the S-4 Logistics Chief at 7th Marine Regiment, and deployed with RCT-7 in support of OEF 2-12 and 1-13.  He was frocked to rank of First Sergeant in May of 2014. He was then assigned orders to MCRD San Diego where served as the Company First Sergeant, Company B, First Recruit Training Battalion. Upon completion of his tour on the depot in May of 2016, he was assigned orders to 1st Marine Raider Battalion as the Company D First Sergeant and then was selected for the rank of Sergeant Major in October of 2017.  Assigned as the Sergeant Major of MWSS 371 (Sand Sharks) in March of 2018 and deployed in support of Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force-Crisis Response Central Command.  Upon completeion of his duties in February 2020, he received orders to be the Sergeant Major for VMA 214 (Black Sheep).  In June 2021, he received orders to become the Inspector Instructor Sergeant Major 4th Law Enforcement Battalion.

Sergeant Major Hammer’s personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 3 Gold Stars in lieu of 4th award, as well as the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Gold Star in lieu of 2nd award.
