Sergeant Major David Mendez
Sergeant Major, 3rd Battalion, 14th Marine Regiment

Sergeant Major Mendez entered Recruit Training, Parris Island, SC in October 1995 and was promoted to the rank of Private First Class upon graduation. He attended The School of Infantry-East in February 1996 and was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. Upon graduation of SOI, Sergeant Major Mendez attended the Basic Landing Support Specialist School.
                
After graduating from the Basic Landing Support Specialist School, Sergeant Major Mendez received orders to Camp Lejeune and checked in with 2nd Landing Support Battalion/Landing Force Shore Party. During this period Sergeant Major Mendez was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines. Sergeant Major Mendez conducted numerous schools and attended Jungle Warfare Training Center, Fort Sherman Panama, while assigned to 3/6. During this period, Sergeant Major Mendez graduated from the Jungle Warfare Training Course and conducted security missions in the region. After completion of JWTC, Sergeant Major Mendez was assigned to BLT 3/6 and deployed with the 24th MEU from 1997-1998. During this period, the 24th MEU was reassigned to support Operations Desert Thunder and Desert Fox in Kuwait. Upon return, Sergeant Major Mendez was promoted to the rank of Corporal and reassigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marines in order to redeploy on another MEU. Sergeant Major Mendez was assigned to the 24th MEU as BLT 1/6.
 
Returning to the 24thMEU, Sergeant Major Mendez attended the Helicopter Rope Suspension Training Course and supported HRST operations for the deployment. During the deployment, Sergeant Major Mendez participated in operations of security missions in Tirana, Albania, participated as a member of Joint Task Force Nobile Anvil, and Operation Allied Force while deployed to Kosovo. Upon return, Sergeant Major Mendez was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and preformed the duties as Platoon Guide. Sergeant Major Mendez conducted a lateral transfer and attended the LAV Crewman Course at Camp Pendleton, CA. After completion of the LAV Crewman Course where he was the honor graduate, Sergeant Major Mendez was reassigned to Company D, 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Quantico, VA. Sergeant Major Mendez joined the SMCR in February 2000. 

Sergeant Major Mendez attended college at George Mason University for studies in Administration of Justice and mobilized in February 2003, with 2nd LAR Bn. He was assigned as a Vehicle Commander for an LAV-25 and supported combat operations for Operation Iraqi Freedom and was part of Task Force Tarawa. Upon return home in October 2003, Sergeant Major Mendez continued his studies at George Mason University. 

In March 2005, Sergeant Major Mendez started his civilian career with the Department of Homeland Security/Federal Protective Service Police, as Mountain Bike Officer and Field Training Officer. In June 2014, Sergeant Major Mendez continued his civilian career as a Federal Officer with the Department of Homeland Security/Office of the Chief Security Officer where he conducts investigations and was promoted to Branch Chief in March of 2019. In September of 2005, Sergeant Major Mendez met his wife and was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in May 2006. Sergeant Major Mendez Married his wife in August 2007 and mobilized again with 2nd LAR in December 2007. Sergeant Major Mendez was assigned as a Platoon Sergeant, as well as the Company Master Gunner, and conducted combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon return home in October 2008, Sergeant Major Mendez was assigned to 4th ANGLICO, West Palm Beach, FL in April 2009. He was assigned as a Platoon Sergeant for 1st Brigade Platoon. 

Sergeant Major Mendez was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant in November 2009. Sergeant Major Mendez was mobilized as an Individual Augmentee as a Weapons Intelligence Team SNCOIC in May 2010. Upon assignment, Sergeant Major Mendez deployed to Afghanistan in August 2010. Once he arrived in country, Sergeant Major Mendez was tasked by Task Force Paladin to report to Regimental Combat Team-2. Once he arrived to RCT-2 Area of Operations, Sergeant Major Mendez was sent to Sangin, Afghanistan in support of 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines. Sergeant Major Mendez was the Battalion’s Weapons Intelligence Team SNCOIC and advised the Battalion Commander on enemy insurgent and coalition IED Tactics Techniques and Procedures. He conducted numerous dismounted patrols and analyzed hundreds of IED’s in order to attack the network, and defeat the device. Sergeant Major Mendez redeployed home and returned to 4th ANGLICO in February 2011. He attended the Fire Support Coordination Center Course in November 2011. 

Sergeant Major was assigned to E Co, 4th LAR, Syracuse, NY in May of 2012. Sergeant Major Mendez held the billet of Platoon Sergeant for an LAV-25 Platoon. Sergeant Major Mendez was then selected to the rank of First Sergeant in April 2013. Sergeant Major Mendez was assigned to E Co, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines and held the billet of Company First Sergeant. 

Sergeant Major Mendez completed two successful tours as a Company First Sergeant with E Co, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines and B Co, Intelligence Support Battalion. Sergeant Major Mendez was selected to his current rank in May of 2019 and received orders to 3rd Bn, 14th Marines as the Battalion Sergeant Major. 

Sergeant Major Mendez’s personal awards include Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2nd Award), Navy Achievement Medal (4th Award), Combat Action Ribbon (2nd Award).
