SgtMaj Kruthers enlisted in the Marine Corps in October 1994 and reported to MCRD Parris Island, SC on 18 June 1995. Upon graduation from Company K, 3d Bn, Private Kruthers was promoted to Private First Class and attended Marine Combat Training, Camp Geiger, NC and Assault Amphibian Vehicle (AAV) Crewman School, Camp Pendleton, CA receiving the PMOS of 1833. 
In December 1995, PFC Kruthers reported to 1st platoon, Company C, 3d Assault Amphibian Battalion, Camp Pendleton, CA. In May 1996, PFC Kruthers was promoted to Lance Corporal and deployed on UDP to Okinawa, Japan. He was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Corporal in September 1996 and was assigned as the company clerk. In September 1997, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and re-assigned as a vehicle crew chief in 2d platoon, Company C. In January 1998, Sgt Kruthers reported to 2d platoon, Company E, 3d AABn where he was assigned as Assistant 1st Section Leader. He deployed in June 1998 with the 15th MEU(SOC) on the USS Duluth of the Essex Amphibious Readiness Group. After returning to Camp Pendleton in December 1998, Sgt Kruthers was assigned as Section Leader of the AAV Mine Clearing Line Charge (MCLC) section. 
In June 1999, Sgt Kruthers was honorably discharged from the regular component of the U.S. Marine Corps, at which time he re-enlisted into the reserve component. He subsequently reported to AAV platoon, H&S Company, 4th AABn, Tampa, FL. In October 2001, he was promoted to Staff Sergeant. In January 2003, SSgt Kruthers was assigned as 1st Section Leader, 2d platoon, Company A, 4th AABn, and deployed to Kuwait and subsequently Iraq, participating in the invasion phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom with Regimental Combat Team 1. During this time, he was involved in the battle of An Nasiriyah on 24-25 March 2003, amongst other skirmishes all the way into Baghdad. After returning to the United States in June 2003 he was re-deployed in August through October 2003 to Queensland, Australia participating in Joint Training Operation Crocodile. 
In March 2005, SSgt Kruthers deployed to Al-Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned as 1st Section Leader, 2d platoon, Company A, 4th AABn and was attached to Regimental Combat Team 5. He participated in several major battles throughout Al-Anbar Province which took him to the edges of the Syrian border. SSgt Kruthers returned to Tampa, FL in October 2005 and was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant in November 2005. From November 2005 to June 2010 he served as AAV platoon commander, Company GySgt, and "acting" H&S Company 1stSgt. 
In June 2010, he was promoted to 1stSgt and re-assigned to Company E, Anti-Terrorism Battalion located in Bessemer, AL. In June 2011, 1stSgt Kruthers deployed to Jordan with Company F, AT Bn in support of the Jordanian Operation Deployment Program (JODP) to assist in training the Jordanian Armed Forces for future OEF operations. In June 2012, 1stSgt Kruthers returned to Company E, AT Bn and due to Force Structure Re-alignment (FSRG), in May 2013 he participated in the company's deactivation. In June 2013, 1stSgt Kruthers was re-assigned to Detachment A (rear), Marine Wing Communications Squadron 48, Marine Air Control Group 48, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing located in Great Lakes, IL. 
In May 2014, he was promoted to his current rank of Sergeant Major and posted to 6th Engineer Support Battalion, 4th Marine Logistics Group, headquartered in Portland, OR. In June 2017, he was posted as the Regimental Sergeant Major for 14th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, headquartered in Ft. Worth, TX. In August 2020, he was posted at his current command as the Regimental Sergeant Major for Combat Logistics Regiment-45, 4th Marine Logistics Group, headquartered in Marietta, GA.
SgtMaj Kruthers has been a Deputy Sheriff with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in Tampa, FL since October 2000 and is currently assigned to the motorcycle traffic enforcement unit. He earned an Associate in Science degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies (magna cum laude) from Hillsborough Community College. 
SgtMaj Kruthers' personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (w/ 2 Gold Stars), Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (w/ 2 combat "V" distinguishing devices), Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, and Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal (w/ 1 silver star, 1 bronze star).
