Lieutenant Colonel Larson is a native of Iowa City, Iowa. After graduating from the University of Iowa in 2003 with a degree in Journalism, he received his commission through the Combined Officer Candidates Course. Completing The Basic School in February 2004, Second Lieutenant Larson reported to the Field Artillery Officers Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and graduated in July 2004 as the Distinguished Honor Graduate of Class 3-04.
Second Lieutenant Larson reported to Battery G, 2d Battalion, 11th Marines in July 2004. In August 2004, he deployed in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM as a rifle platoon commander. Remaining with Battery G, he deployed again in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM in February 2006 as the battery executive officer.
After completing active service in July 2007, Captain Larson enrolled at Drake University Law School, where he graduated with High Honors, Order of the Coif in December 2009. During law school, he affiliated with Company E, 2d Battalion, 24th Marines as the company executive officer. After passing the State of Iowa Bar Examination in February 2010, Captain Larson practiced employment law from the Des Moines office of Scheldrup Blades.
In June 2010, Captain Larson joined Marine Wing Support Squadron 471 as Commanding Officer, Airfield Operations Company. In 2011, Captain Larson and 230 Marines from across U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Reserve mobilized and then deployed in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM as General Support Motor Transport Company, 1st Marine Logistics Group.
Returning from Afghanistan in September 2012, Captain Larson resumed his legal practice, but resigned in February 2013 to affiliate with the Active Reserve Program. After an initial assignment as Executive Officer, Headquarters and Support Battalion, School of Infantry (West), Major Larson transferred to Infantry Training Battalion for duty as its battalion executive officer in July 2014.
In July 2015, Major Larson reported to the 1st Marine Corps Recruting District in Garden City, New York as Officer in Charge, Prior Service Recruiting Station 1. During this tour, his recruiting station obtained the Commandant of the Marine Corps Superior Achievement Award as well as the Eastern Recruiting Region Prior Service Recruiting Station of the Year Award for fiscal years 2016 and 2017.
In July 2018, Major Larson reported to U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South for assignment as Reserve Liaison Officer. He was subsequently and collaterally assigned as Staff Secretary.
Lieutenant Colonel Larson transferred to 4th Civil Affairs Group as Inspector-Instructor in June 2021.
Lieutenant Colonel Larson completed the Amphibious Warfare School Distance Education Program in 2005, the Command and Staff College Distance Education Program as a Distinguished Graduate in 2015, and Joint and Combined Warfighting School - Hybrid in 2016.
He is a frequent contributor to the Marine Corps Gazette.
