First Sergeant Mwenya C. Mundende

1stSgt Mwenya Mundende is a native of Lusaka, Zambia but grew up in Edmond, OK. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in August of 2006 and attended boot camp in September 2006 at Marine Recruit Depot, San Diego. Upon graduation, he attended Marine Combat Training (MCT) at Camp Pendleton, California. Following MCT, he then attended Basic Warehouseman's Course at Camp Johnson, North Carolina where he earned the military occupational specialty 3051.

In early April 2007, Private First Class Mundende checked in to Medical Logistics Company, 2d Supply Battalion, 3d Marine Logistics Group, Camp Kinser, Okinawa, Japan; where he served as a warehouseman, fiscal clerk and Single Marine Program Camp President where he was promoted to Lance Corporal.

Meritoriously promoted to Corporal (Cpl) in 2008, he was selected to be a liaison for Medical Logistics Company as a fiscal supply liaison working with 563rd Army Medical Logistics Company in Waegwan, South Korea. After completing his time in Korea, Cpl Mundende made a permanent change of station move to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he served with 2d Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company as a supply chief. During this time, he coordinated required issued gear for deploying Marines and sustained two brigades during a cold weather mountain warfare training evolution.

Cpl Mundende's, end of active service came on 11 September 2010 and was promoted to Sergeant (Sgt) in October 2010, joining Selected Marine Forces Reserve Unit, Rocket Battery F, 2d Battalion, 14th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division he served as High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) crewman, and local security chief. In May of 2011, he attended Basic Cannon Crewman Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Following graduation in the end of May, Sgt Mundende attended the Basic HIMARS crewman Course in June of 2011. Upon graduation Sgt Mundende returned to Fox Battery where he became a HIMARS Launcher Chief running a section of six 0814 HIMARS crewmen. In 2013 he attended a combined arms exercise “African Lion” in Morocco.

While at Fox Battery, he was promoted to Staff Sergeant and Gunnery Sergeant (GySgt). He served in such billets as Platoon Sergeant, Local Security, and assistant Field Artillery Chief. His collateral duties consisted of Marine Corps Ball Coordinator and Corporals Course Chief Instructor for 2d Battalion, 14th Marines.

In July of 2016 he conducted an inner unit transfer (IUT) to Headquarters Battery, 2d Battalion- 14th Marines in Grand Prairie, Texas. Serving as the Battery GySgt, he oversaw the training of all company, and battalion staff. GySgt Mundende also served as the Staff Noncommissioned Officer in Charge of the battalions Command Sponsored Corporals Course.

In February of 2018 GySgt Mundende transferred to Kilo Battery, 2d Battalion, 14th Marines in Huntsville, Alabama and served as 1st Platoon Sergeant. In April of 2018 he served as Platoon Sergeant for a live fire HIMARS field exercise supporting Weapons Tactics Instructors Course 2 - 20 in Yuma, Arizona. Firing three M31A1 Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (GMLRS), during this time his platoon completed one HIMARS Rapid Infiltration utilizing the C130 and one sensor to shooter integrated training with the HIMARS and F35 Lighting II.

In July of 2018, GySgt Mundende was selected to be the platoon sergeant for, Kilo Battery, 2d Battalion, 14th Marine Regiments, Task Force Southwest 19.2 HIMARS detachment in Helmand and Nimroz Province, Afghanistan. During the deployment, the HIMARS detachment conducted multiple combat missions supporting the Resolute Support Mission of train, advise and assist the local forces; utilizing accurate fires provided by the HIMARS weapon system. Following deployment, GySgt Mundende was selected to the rank of First Sergeant. First Sergeant Mundende was then transferred to Company F, 2d Battalion, 25th Marines. As the advisor to the Commanding Officer, 1stSgt Mundende took charge of all Marshalling Area Coordinating Officer duties, assisted in COVID-19 response, reporting and mitigation, several Mission Readiness Exercises. Aided his unit in an Integrated Training Exercise aboard 29 Palms, California, to which Fox Co was top performer and were selected to attend Tradewinds Exercise 2023 in Guyana, South America.

May 2023 First Sergeant Mundende conducted a IUT to where he currently serves as the Company First Sergeant of Antitank Training Company, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division.

His personal decorations include Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat “C” Device and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals w/ gold star.
