Sergeant Major Robert L. McSweeney

Robert Leo McSweeney is a native of Boston, Massachusetts.

He entered the Marine Corps delayed entry program in 1989 and graduated boot camp from Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina in 1990. In 1990 he was assigned to Alpha Company, 3rd Light Armored Infantry Battalion for duty as a platoon mechanic. He served in a variety of billets including LAV mechanic, LAV driver, scout and vehicle commander. While assigned to this unit, Lance Corporal McSweeney deployed to Okinawa on a UDP in support of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm as the company helped maintain a military presence in the Pacific while most of the United States military was concentrated on the Gulf War. He participated in exercises in Okinawa, Thailand, The Philippines and Camp Fuji Japan during the thirteen month deployment.

Lance Corporal McSweeney reported to Alpha Company, 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion in 1992. While assigned to this unit he took part in Task Force Guadalcanal, which commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Marine Battle for Guadalcanal during a 3 month deployment to the Pacific. He was meritoriously promoted to Corporal in 1993. Corporal McSweeney was then assigned to Delta Company 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. In 1994 and 1996 he deployed with the LAR company in the Battalion Landing Team on two separate MEUs. He took part in operation United Shield, the evacuation of UN and US troops from Somalia, from February to March of 1995. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1996.

Sergeant McSweeney requested and received orders to Drill Instructor School in 1997. He served as a drill instructor with India Company 3rd Recruit Training Battalion MCRD San Diego. He then returned to 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion before leaving active duty in January of 2000.

Sergeant McSweeney joined the Marine Reserves in 2004 and was assigned to 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. During his time with the unit he deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan and served in the billets of Squad leader, Platoon Sergeant, Jump Platoon Commander, Infantry Platoon Commander, Company Operations Chief and Acting First Sergeant. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in 2007 and Gunnery Sergeant in 2012. In 2013 Gunnery Sergeant McSweeney participated in operation Talisman Saber and was the enlisted liaison Marine for the OIC of Australian forces during the one month exercise. In 2014 Gunnery Sergeant McSweeney was the SNCOIC for a Marine training team tasked with teaching Guatemalan Marines basic infantry tactics and techniques over a two month period in Guatemala.

He was promoted to First Sergeant in 2015 and from 2015 to 2020 he served as the Company First Sergeant for Alpha Company 1st Bn 23rd Marines, Supply Company CLB-453 and Fox Company 2nd Bn 23rd Marines. He was frocked to Sergeant Major in May of 2020 and reported to Headquarters 1st Bn 25th Marines as the Battalion Sergeant Major.

His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal w/ 1 gold star, Navy and Marine Achievement Medal w/ 3 gold stars, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
