Sergeant Major Gerald D. Furnari

Sergeant Major Gerald D. Furnari enlisted in the Marine Corps in April 1999 and attended recruit training at MCRD, San Diego in May 2000.  Upon completion of recruit training, he was assigned as a student at Infantry Training Battalion, SOI West, Camp Pendleton where he received the Military Occupational Specialty of 0311, Rifleman.   
 
Upon completion of infantry training, Lance Corporal Furnari was assigned to Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division.  While serving with Fox Company, he deployed as a team leader on the 31st MEU in 2001, and as a squad leader in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Returning from deployment in 2003, Sergeant Furnari was transferred to Camp LeJeune, NC and was assigned as a Squad Leader in Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines.   
 
While a member of Charlie Company, Sergeant Furnari deployed as part of BLT 1/2 on the 24th MEU in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004.  Upon return from deployment in 2005, Sergeant Furnari was assigned to the Battalion's Sniper Platoon, and served as an assistant team leader with BLT 1/2 on the 22nd MEU in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom once again.   
 
Returning from deployment in 2006, Sergeant Furnari was transferred to Camp Pendleton, CA and served as an instructor at the Urban Assault Leader Course, Division Schools.  After being promoted to Staff Sergeant in 2007, Staff Sergeant Furnari was transferred to 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, Camp Pendleton, and was assigned as a platoon sergeant with Echo Company.  While a member of Echo Company, he deployed as part of BLT 2/5 on the 15th MEU in 2008.   
 
Upon returning from deployment, Staff Sergeant Furnari was transferred to the School of Infantry, Camp Pendleton, and served as the Chief Instructor for Infantry Machine Gun Leader Course, Advanced Infantry Training Battalion.  
 
In January 2012, Staff Sergeant Furnari was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant, and subsequently received orders to 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, Camp Pendleton.  While assigned to Weapons Company  as a CAAT Platoon Sergeant, Gunnery Sergeant Furnari deployed with BLT 3/5 in September 2012 as part of the 15th MEU.   
 
Upon returning from deployment in May 2013, Gunnery Sergeant Furnari received orders to 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 29 Palms CA, in September, where he once again was assigned as a CAAT Platoon Sergeant in Weapons Company.  The battalion deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in February 2014, and upon completion in October, Gunnery Sergeant Furnari assumed duties as the Company Gunnery Sergeant for Bravo Company 1st Battalion, 7th Marines.   The battalion deployed as part of SPMAGTF 16.1 in September 2015 in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.  
 
Upon return from deployment in April 2016, Gunnery Sergeant Furnari was promoted to First Sergeant in May, and subsequently received orders to the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center, Bridgeport, CA, where he served as the Infantry Training Company First Sergeant from June 2016 through August 2020. 
 
In August 2020, First Sergeant Furnari was promoted to Sergeant Major.  He received orders to Camp LeJeune, NC in September 2020, and served as the Combat Logistics Battalion 26, battalion Sergeant Major.  The battalion deployed as part of the 22nd MEU from March through October 2022.  Upon return from deployment, Sergeant Major Furnari received orders to Tacoma, Washington, where currently serves as the I&I Sergeant Major, CLB 23.  
 
His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with gold star, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star and Combat Distinguishing Device, and the Combat Action Ribbon with gold star.
