Sergeant Major Matthew G. King enlisted in the Marine Corps on 26 June 2000 and reported to MCRD, Parris Island, SC. He then attended Marine Combat Training in Camp Geiger, NC. Upon graduation, he reported to Assault Amphibian School Battalion and earned the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of 1833. Upon completion of his MOS school, he was assigned to 2d Assault Amphibian Battalion, Camp Lejeune, NC from March 2001- July 2004 where he served as an Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAV) Crewman, Crew Chief, and Section leader. During his tour, he deployed with Battalion Landing Team 2/2 of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
In July 2004, he reported to Assault Amphibian School Battalion, Camp Pendleton, CA. Where he served as Crew Chief Company Clerk and Instructor. During his tour, he was selected for Staff Sergeant and completed Assault Amphibian Unit Leaders Course.
In August 2007, he was assigned to 2d Assault Amphibian Battalion, Camp Lejeune, NC. During his tour, he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom which was followed by another deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. During both deployments, he served as a Section Leader.
In June 2011, he received orders to attend Basic Recruiter School (BRC) Class 3-11 and earned the MOS of 8411. Subsequently, he checked in to Recruiting Sub-Station (RSS) Saginaw, Michigan, Recruiting Station (RS) Lansing, Michigan. While there, he served as a canvassing recruiter and earned Recruiting Station Lansing Recruiter of the Year. In August 2012, he was assigned as the Staff Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge of RSS Northern Michigan and was selected to rank of Gunnery Sergeant.
In May 2013, he reported to 3d Assault Amphibian Battalion, Camp Pendleton, CA where he served as the Platoon Sergeant for 2nd Platoon, Company B. During his tour, he deployed on the Unit Deployment Program (UDP) in support of Landing Force Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (LF CARAT). While there, he participated in amphibious exercises in Guam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Upon his return, he was reassigned to Headquarters and Service Company where he served as Company Logistics Chief until January 2017 until he selected to the rank of First Sergeant.
In May 2017, reported to Combat Logistics Battalion 7, Combat Logistics Regiment 1, 1st Marine Logistics Group, Twentynine Palms, CA where he served as the Company First Sergeant for Headquarters and Services Company. During his tour, he participated in multiple service level exercises aboard MCAGCC, Twentynine Palms, and served as the Battalion Sergeant Major on multiple occasions until February 2020.
In March 2020, Sergeant Major King reported to 2d Intelligence Battalion, Camp Lejeune, NC where he served as the Headquarters and Services Company First Sergeant. There he implemented polices to streamline current procedures to include the new join process and enlisted recognition boards. He and his company command team authored "Sabotaging Ourselves" which was published in the Marine Corps Gazette. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Major in January 2022.
In March 2022, Sergeant Major King reported to the Inspector-Instructor Staff, Combat Logistics Battalion 453 where he currently serves as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader. Sergeant Major King holds an Associates of Arts in General Education and a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Organizational Leadership from National University. His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with three gold stars and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star.
