Major Dunaway is a native of Lydia Mill, South Carolina. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in June 1996 and completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina. He subsequently graduated from the Ammunition Specialist Course, at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama in July 1998. He served with Ammunition Company, Greenville, South Carolina as a member of the Selected Marine Corps Reserve (SMCR) and attended the University of South Carolina, graduating in December 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant via Platoon Leaders Class and completed The Basic School in July 2003 and Surface-to-Air Warfare Officers Course in September 2003.

In September 2003, Second Lieutenant Dunaway was assigned to 2d Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion (2d LAAD) in Cherry Point, North Carolina where he served as a Platoon Commander with Bravo Battery. In February 2005, 2d LAAD was designated as Provisional Security Battalion in Iraq where First Lieutenant Dunaway assumed duties as Platoon Commander and Company Executive Officer. In August 2005, he returned to Cherry Point with 2d LAAD as Bravo Battery Executive Officer. In January 2006, he travelled to South America as part of a Subject Matter Expert Exchange with the Colombian Marines then returned to Bravo Battery through June 2006.  

From June 2006 to July 2008, Captain Dunaway was Logistics Officer, Assistant Operations Officer and Inspections Officer for Region 3, Marine Corps Embassy Security Group (MCESG) in Bangkok, Thailand. Upon return stateside in July 2008 he transitioned to the Individual Ready Reserve.

Returning to the SMCR in January 2009, he was assigned as Adjutant, 4th Maintenance Battalion, Charlotte, North Carolina. He deployed to Bahrain with Marine Forces Central Command (Forward) as Adjutant and Personnel Officer from April 2011 to March 2012. Next, he completed his tour with 4th Maintenance Battalion and reported to 8th Marine Corps District in Fort Worth, Texas in August, 2012 as a Recruiting Support Officer where he was promoted to Major and remained through August, 2015.

Major Dunaway returned to MCESG Headquarters in Quantico, Virginia in September, 2015 as an Individual Mobilization Augmentee through June, 2017 while completing the Marine Corps Command and Staff College seminar program. In July 2017 he reported to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas as a student at the Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC). In Kansas he completed the Red Team Member Course at the University of Foreign Military and Cultural Studies, graduating in June, 2018.

Major Dunaway transferred to Virginia Beach, Virginia in June 2018, for duty as Operations Officer with MACS-24.  He assumed the duties of MACS-24 Site Commander in July 2019.  

Major Dunaway’s personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with Combat “V” and two gold stars) and Combat Action Ribbon. He has a Master of Science from Webster University, Master of Business Administration from Texas Christian University, and a Master of Military Art and Science from CGSC.
