Lance Cpl. Nicholas R. Smarr, a Reserve Marine, was killed in the line of duty when responding to a domestic disturbance call in Americus, Ga. on Dec. 7, 2016, while serving as a police officer for the Americus Police Department. Janice Smarr, the mother of Lance Cpl. Nicholas Smarr, accepts the Navy and Marine Corps Medal on behalf of her son at Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Ga., Dec. 7, 2018. Marines participating in a Security Augmentation Force course, get OC sprayed at Marine Corps Support Facility, New Orleans, Louisiana, Sept. 14, 2018, as part of the process to become SAF qualified. During the course Marines will get OC qualified, pistol qualified, as well as learn how to conduct vehicle searches and serve as armed security. The mission of the course is to produce qualified Marines able to serve as augmentations during times of heightened security for the Provost Marshal’s Office or Marine Corps Police Department. Reserve Marines with 4th Law Enforcement Battalion, Force Headquarters Group, Marine Forces Reserve, conducted their annual training requirements aboard Camp Atterbury-Muscatatuck Urban Training Center, Indiana from June 8-19th. The Marines participate in realistic simulated police military tactics to stay ready to augment the active duty side.
