Sergeant Major Jorma R. Fitje enlisted in the Marine Corps delayed entry program on 23 November 1993. He graduated from the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island, South Carolina in May 1994. Upon graduation from recruit training, he attended and completed Marine Combat training at Camp Lejeune, N.C. in June 1994. Upon completion of Marine Combat training, he attended and completed the Field Wireman course at Marine Corps Communication and Electronics School, 29 Palms, California in August 1994. In August 1994, he was assigned to Wire Platoon, Communication Support Company, 6th Communication Battalion, at Ft. Schuyler, New York where he served as a Field Wireman.
In March 1995, he was assigned to Wire Platoon, Alpha Company, 6th Communication Battalion, Amityville, New York where he served as a Field Wireman and held several billets as a Team Leader, Squad Leader, and Wire Chief until August 2000. While serving at Alpha Company, 6th Communication Battalion, Sergeant Major Fitje deployed to Norway in support of Operation Battle Griffin 1996, Operation Strong Resolve Norway 1998, and to El Salvador in support of CENTAM Fuerzas Alidas 1997 Peacekeeping Operation. In July 2000 Sergeant Major Fitje transferred to the Inactive Ready Reserve where he was given an Honorable Discharge.
In April 2003, Sergeant Major Fitje enlisted into the Selected Marine Corps and was assigned to Detachment D, Environmental Services Division, 4th Marine Division, Red Bank, New Jersey where he served as a Weapons of Mass Destruction Hazardous Materials Technician. In 2004 Sergeant Major Fitje deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II-2 where he was assigned to the G-3 Police Cell, 1st Marine Division and served as a Police Liaison/Instructor, Police Training Team. During his tour in Iraq he served in Ar Ramadi and Al Fallujah. In 2005, Sergeant Major Fitje returned from Iraq and returned to Detachment D, Environmental Services Division.
In 2007, he was assigned to Alpha Company, 6th Communication Battalion, 4th MLG where he served as the Company Gunnery Sergeant. In May 2009, Sergeant Major Fitje was selected and activated to be a Military Liaison/ Senior Enlisted Marine Advisor for a Security Cooperation Team at Marine Corps Training and Advisory Group (MCTAG) that deployed to Liberia, West Africa in support of a State Department program Liberia Security Sector Reform. In 2010, he returned from Liberia, West Africa to Alpha Company, 6th Comm Bn where he served as the Assistant Operations Chief and Company Gunnery Sergeant. In May 2010, Sergeant Major Fitje was re-activated and selected to be a Military Liaison/Team Leader for the U.S. Marine Forces Africa (MARFORAF), Security Cooperation Team, Stuttgart, Germany. Operating out of MARFORAF, Sergeant Major Fitje deployed to various African nations in support of Marine Forces Africa security cooperation objectives.
In 2011, Sergeant Major Fitje returned from his deployment with MARFORAF and resumed duties as the Company Gunnery Sergeant for Alpha Company, 6th Communication Battalion, 4th MLG.
In May 2013, Sergeant Major Fitje was frocked to First Sergeant and assumed duties as Company First Sergeant at Golf Company, 2d Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment.
In May 2018, Sergeant Major Fitje was frocked to his current rank and assumed duties as Battalion Sergeant Major, 3d Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment. Upon completion of his tour in May 2021, Sergeant Major Fitje assumed duties as Battalion Sergeant Major, 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion.
In April 2022, Sergeant Major Fitje reported to Marine Aircraft 49 to assume duties as the Group Sergeant Major.
His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal w/ (1) gold star, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
Sergeant Major Fitje is a retired Investigator for the New York City Department of Correction with 21 years of service where he was assigned to the Emergency Service Unit as a tactical training instructor. He currently works as a law enforcement and military consultant.
