NAVY - MARINE RESERVE TRAINING CENTER, Washington D.C -- The crowd cheered and demonstrated their full support toward the Young Marine units, which came from across the nation to take part in the Second Annual National Young Marine Drill Competition, here, May 25.
The 25 Young Marine units from Illinois, Florida, Maryland and other locations, competed to see who would take top honors in color guard, standard drill, and trick drill.
Trophies were awarded to the top three platoons and to the top three platoon sergeants for their ability to call the drill movements.
"Without support from veteran and active duty Marines, the event would've never taken place," said Maj. Demetrius Bellizaire, event coordinator. "It's a great feeling to know your giving back to your community."
Twenty Marines from Supply Detachment A, Rations Company, Inspector-Instructor Staff, Marine Barracks 8th and I, and the Montford Point Marines provided logistical and administrative support for the event.
More than 1,000 family members and friends of the Young Marines came to support the young hard chargers.
"This kind of event gives a sense camaraderie within the units and to all of the supporters," Bellizaire said.
As part of the day's events, the Montford Point Marines, Chapter 6, Washington DC, held a luncheon on behalf of the Young Marines. Also, Col. Richard Reed, chief of staff, 4th FSSG, gave a lecture about the Marine Corps' involvement in the Korean War.
"It was beautiful day for all who attended," said Bellizaire. "I'm looking forward to next year's event."
