A motor transport mechanic from 6th Communications Battalion, 4th Marine Logistics Group received the Iwo Jima Award for being the Reservist of the Year at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., Sept. 13.

Sgt. Renauld A. Samuels, a 26-year-old Queens, N.Y., native, was the noncommissioned officer in charge of 30 Marines, who were responsible for keeping Combat Service Support Company 113’s vehicles functional in the harsh Iraqi desert environment and under hostile fire. He was also called upon to provide motor pool maintenance leadership in Fallujah, Iraq.

While in Iraq, his convoy came under fire after the lead vehicle was destroyed by an improvised explosive device. Samuels went forward with apparent disregard for his own safety to assist in the evacuation of the wounded.

His leadership and technical skill under the extreme conditions earned him a meritorious promotion to sergeant.

“It’s almost surreal, a feeling of accomplishment hasn’t sunk in yet,” said Samuels.

He has also volunteered for countless funeral and color guard details in support of the Marines of the New York City area.

Samuels was presented the award by the commandant and sergeant major of the Marine Corps.
