ABOUT 

Gunslinger is a large military exercise conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, and the Kansas Air National Guard’s 134th Air Control Squadron of McConnell Air Force Base. More than 1,300 Marines from 11 home training centers across the country have deployed to multiple areas throughout Kansas to participate in Gunslinger 22.

Marines with Company E, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, fire the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon on the range here as part of Exercise Heavy Metal 2013, June 20. The team of Marines that carry the light machine gun includes the firing Marine, the target sighter/reloader, and a third man that brings ammunition when needed. The Marines fired on targets up to 1,200 meters away exhibiting one of the capabilities of the Heavy Metal Task Force. The exercise allowed the Marines to hone their skills as a unit for more than their monthly two-day drill periods.
