LtCol Farrell graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in May 1996. After completion of The Basic School, he reported to the Naval Air Training Wing Command and was designated a Naval Aviator in December 1998.
Upon completion of CH-46E training, LtCol Farrell was assigned to MCAS Miramar, CA, and HMM-163 where he worked as the Buildings and Grounds Officer and Responsible Officer. In the summer of 2001 he deployed with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit with follow on operations with Task Force 58 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom FOB Reno, Afghanistan.
In the summer of 2003 he deployed once again, this time with the newly formed 13th MEU Strike Group, conducting operations throughout southern Iraq and Africa.
In March of 2004 remained with the squadron as the Quality Assurance Officer and as a Functional Check Pilot Instructor.
In October of 2004 he was reassigned to HMM-764 at Edwards AFB, CA. In the spring of 2005 he deployed with the unit in support of OIF 04-06 as the assistant operations officer in Al Assad Iraq. Upon return he took over a number of billets within the squadron to include, Airframes Officer, Flight Line Officer, QAO, Assistant Aviation Maintenance Officer, The Director of Safety and Standardization and the Maintenance Officer.
In January of 2013 upon decommissioning of HMM-764 LtCol Farrell transferred to MAG 41 Det B to act as the Executive Officer until that unit decommissioned in June of 2013. In July of 2013-July of 2015 LtCol Farrell reported MAG 49 HQ to act the Executive Officer and the Site Commander for Joint Base MDL. In 2016 LtCol Farrell reported Site Support MCAS Miramar to act as the Site Commander for the site.
His personal decorations include the Air Medal and six Strike/Flight awards, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
