Gunnery Sgt. Louis M. Nokes is awarded the Purple Heart at Marine Corps Support Facility New Orleans, Dec. 5, 2022. In 2005, then Sgt. Nokes' Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) was struck by an improvised explosive device while conducting a convoy operation in Ramadi, Iraq. Nokes' was knocked unconscious and was pulled from the burning MTVR receiving a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Nokes began the process to receive his Purple Heart retroactively after MARADMIN 245/11 was published updating the Marine Corps' criteria on the Purple Heart award including TBIs. The Purple Heart Medal is the United States' oldest military decoration awarded in the name of the president to those wounded in the service of this country. Woodrow Arthur and Cleveland Williams were two of approximately 20,000 black Marines who were trained at the Montford Point training facility in Camp Johnson, North Carolina, when military forces were still segregated.

Members of the local Molly Marine chapter of the Women Marines Association gather around the Molly Marine statue they restore every year. This original Molly Marine statue was sculpted in New Orleans in 1943 in order to assist in recruiting women during World War II. The statue now resides on the corner of Canal St. and Elk Pl. in the French Quarter. The Molly Marine chapter was awarded the Ruth and Dick Broe Award, the most prestigious award given to WMA chapters for overall outstanding chapter achievement, at their most recent national convention and professional development conference that took place in Philadelphia from Aug. 30 through Sept. 4.
