Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Wing was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in May of 2009 after graduating from College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts with a B.A. in English. After completing The Basic School and flight training, First Lieutenant Wing was designated a Naval Aviator in March of 2012.
Upon completion of the H-1 Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS), First Lieutenant Wing was assigned to HMLA-267 for follow-on training in the AH-1Z. While at HMLA-267 (October 2012 – August 2015), First Lieutenant, then Captain, Wing served in a variety of leadership billets; these included S-6 OIC, Adjutant, and AH-1Z Flight Officer. Captain Wing also served as a Rotary Wing Tasker in support of Exercise Desert Scimitar during this period. In August 2015, Captain Wing attached to VMM-166(Reinforced) as part of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (13th MEU), which deployed in February 2016. Captain Wing served as a Night Systems Instructor and as the NATOPS/Standardization Officer on 13th MEU, which included support of contingency operations and various training detachments ashore. While deployed, Captain Wing was selected to become an Operational Test Director at VMX-1. From September 2016 to May 2016, Captain Wing served as the Standardization Officer for HMLA-469, where he gained the additional qualification of H-1 Division Leader.
From 2016-2018, Captain, then Major, Wing served as an AH-1Z Operational Test Director, S-2 OIC, and Assistant Security Manager at VMX-1. During this period, he served as the Marine Corps’ Operational Test lead for the Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM), M282 warhead for Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS), and Distributed Aperture Infrared Countermeasure (DAIRCM) system. He planned and conducted multiple live-fire test events on various test ranges for Department of Defense acquisitions purposes. He also produced multiple test report documents, influencing Marine Corps tactics and procedures. Major Wing also became a Forward Air Controller (Airborne) (FAC-A) and attained a Master’s degree while at VMX-1.
In June of 2019, Major Wing executed an EAS from the Active Component and assessed into the Marine Corps Active Reserve (AR) Program (serving as active duty, Full Time Support personnel for the Reserve Component). He concurrently joined HMLA-775, initially serving as the Future Operations Officer. Major Wing served as an AH-1Z flight instructor for Marine Corps Reserve AH-1W pilots who were converting to the AH-1Z. Major Wing’s other billets at HMLA-775 included Assistant Operations Officer, Operations Officer, and finally Executive Officer. As a command representative and departmental leader, Major Wing implemented multiple measures to improve and solidify the squadron’s operational output, aircrew readiness, and personnel management.
In June of 2023, Major Wing transferred from HMLA-775 to VMR Andrews at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. Serving as VMR Andrews’ Executive Officer, Major Wing completed an aircraft transition to the UC-35D jet. He flew numerous Joint Operational Support Airlift Center (JOSAC) missions which transported high-ranking military personnel to and from the highly restricted Washington D.C. airspace. His duties enabled him to conduct flight operations in Germany, the United Kingdom, Iceland, and Canada. During this time, Major, then Lieutenant Colonel Wing progressed through UC-35D qualifications to ultimately become a Transport Aircraft Commander (TAC) and attain an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) designation.
In June of 2025, Lieutenant Colonel Wing transferred to Reserve Affairs Manpower Management (RAM), Reserve Affairs, HQMC to serve as both the Active Reserve Aviation Officer Monitor and the RAM Deputy Branch Head. In these billets, Lieutenant Colonel Wing was entrusted with guiding the assignments and progression of numerous aviators, as well as leading five distinct Departments within Reserve Affairs. He also continued flying as an augment pilot with VMR Andrews during this tenure. From there, he was assigned to serve as the Executive Officer for Marine Aviation Training Support Group 42 (MATSG-42), beginning in the Summer of 2026.
To date, Lieutenant Colonel Wing has flown over 2400 mishap-free hours. His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
