Thomas A. Gibson is the Battery Commander of Hotel Battery, 3d Battalion, 14th Marines in Richmond, Virginia. He was born in Woodbridge, Virginia and raised in Stafford, Virginia. He received his B.A. in Political Philosophy, Policy, and Law from the University of Virginia in 2006, his M.P.S. in Real Estate Finance from Georgetown University in 2012, his M.B.A. from Cornell University in 2019, and his A.L.M. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Harvard University in 2023. Major Gibson resides in Alexandria, Virginia and serves as a multifamily housing developer.
Major Gibson commissioned in the United States Marine Corps in 2012 after completing Officer Candidate School in December 2012. He subsequently graduated from The Basic School in July 2013 and the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in January 2014. Upon completion of training in February 2014, he reported to India Battery, 3d Battalion, 14th Marines at Allentown, Pennsylvania, where he served as a Forward Observer, Fire Direction Officer, Headquarters Platoon Commander, Liaison Officer, and Executive Officer. In June 2017, he transitioned into the Inactive Ready Reserve to pursue completion of his M.B.A. at Cornell University.
In July 2018, Major Gibson reported to Headquarters Battery, 3d Battalion, 14th Marines in Bristol, Pennsylvania where he served as Executive Officer. In June 2019, he volunteered for Unit Deployment Program 20.1 to Okinawa, Japan in support of 1st Battalion, 25th Marines where he served as a Forward Observer and Company Fire Support Team Leader. During his nine-month deployment, Major Gibson participated in Northern Viper and oversaw a Fire Support Team that successfully participated in the first dive fire training with the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force. Following demobilization in May 2020, Major Gibson reported to Headquarters Battery, 3d Battalion, 14th Marines in Bristol, Pennsylvania in June 2020 where he served as Assistant Liaison Officer. In May 2021, he completed the Expeditionary Warfare School Distance Education Program. In February 2022, Major Gibson transitioned into the Inactive Ready Reserve where he founded a real estate development consulting firm and pursued completion of his masters in Industrial and Organizational Psychology at Harvard University. He graduated in May 2023. In June 2024, Major Gibson assumed the billet of Assistant Logistics Officer at Headquarters Battery, 3d Battalion, 14th Marines in Bristol, Pennsylvania, which he held until his appointment to battery command in October 2024.
Major Gibson's personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Gold Star, the Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal, the Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, the National Defense Medal, the Armed Forces Service Medal with Mobilization Device, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon. Major Gibson has been recognized as a "40 Under 40" Honoree by both Alexandria and Arlington, Virginia Chambers of Commerce and has been appointed by the Governor of Virginia, Senate of Virginia, Arlington County Board, and City Council of Alexandria to various boards and commissions serving Northern Virginia and the Commonwealth. As of July 2024, Major Gibson serves on the Board of the Virginia War Memorial, the Commonwealth of Virginia’s premier monument, museum, and educational center dedicated to Virginians who served to defend the United States from World War II through today.
