Lieutenant Colonel Kenneth W. Malone
Commanding Officer
VMR Belle Chasse

Lieutenant Colonel Malone is a native of Greensboro, North Carolina who moved to Marietta, Georgia where he graduated high school in 2000. He attended Platoon Leaders Course Jr in August of 2001 and returned for Platoon Leaders Course Sr in August of 2003.  In December 2004, he graduated from Georgia Southern University with a Bachelor of Arts in History.  After graduating, in June 2005, he was commissioned as an Active Component Second Lieutenant.

In November 2005, Second Lieutenant Malone reported to The Basic School, and was assigned to Bravo Company.  Following The Basic School, He complete Introductory Flight Screening at Manassas Airport prior to reporting into Marine Aviation Training Support Group 21 in Pensacola, Florida.  In February 2007, he entered the aviation training pipeline beginning with Aviation Preflight Indoctrination (API).  Following API, He was assigned to VT-2 “Doerbirds” at North Whiting Field for Primary Flight Training.  In September 2007, First Lieutenant Malone, completed Primary Flight Training and started Helicopter Advanced Flight Training assigned to HT-18 “Factoryhand.”   In June 2008, he completed Naval Aviation Flight Training, selected AH-1W Cobra  - East Coast, and was designated as a Naval Aviator.  

In July 2008, he checked into HMLAT-303 “Atlas” the Fleet Replacement Squadron for initial AH-1W training.  After completing the training, in December 2008, he was assigned to HMLA-167 “Warriors” on board Marine Corps Air Station New River in Jacksonville, North Carolina.  In February 2008, First Lieutenant Malone deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 9.1.  During this deployment he flew missions from Al Taqaddum Airbase, Sal Sinjar Airbase, and Al Assad Airbase.  

While assigned to HMLA-167, he held the billets of Naval Aviation Training and Operations Officer, Pilot Training Officer, eventually the Assistant Operations Officer.  Throughout his time assigned to HMLA-167, he completed Expeditionary Warfare School Distance Education program, earned the designation as an Attack Helicopter Commander, and earned qualifications as a Night Systems Instructor, Forward Air Controller-Airborne, and Division Leader.   

In May 2013, Captain Malone was assigned to HMLA-773 Det A “Red Dogs” in New Orleans, Louisiana as part of the Active Component I&I staff.  In July of 2014 he attended Aviation Safety Officer School and received the additional MOS as an ASO.    During this assignment he held the positions of Assistant Operations Officer, Assistant Maintenance Officer, and Director of Safety and Standardization.  

In February 2016, Major Malone left the Active Component and joint the Reserve Component as an Active Reserve Officer.  He was selected to serve as the HMLA-773 Det A / MAG-49 Det C Executive Officer.  In 2016 he completed Command and Staff College and also earned a Masters Degree from the University of Oklahoma in Administrative Leadership.   In 2017 he completed the Security Management Course and the Military Justice Senior Officers Course.  

In September 2018, Major Malone was assigned to 4th MAW Headquarters aboard the Marine Corps Support Facility New Orleans.  While at 4th MAW Headquarters he was assigned to the MAW G-3 as the Deputy Future Operations Officer, TEEP & Budget Officer, and later became the Future Operations Officer.  In June 2019, he attended Flight Safety International and became a UC-35 augment pilot supporting VMR Belle Chasse, and then in 2021 he attended CAE and became qualified as a UC-12 augment pilot. In March 2022, Lieutenant Colonel Malone completed USAF Air War College Distance education program.  

In May 2022, Lieutenant Colonel Malone was selected to serve as the Executive Officer for Headquarters Battalion Marine Forces Reserve / Marine Forces South.  In this role, he also served as the Executive Officer for Marine Corps Support Facility New Orleans. In September 2024, LtCol Malone was selected to serve as the Commanding Officer for Marine Transport Squadron Belle Chasse.  

His personal awards include a Meritorious Service Medal (w/ 1 gold star), Air Strike/Flight Medal, Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal (w/ 2 gold star).
