Sergeant Major Travis J. Johnson is a native of Fairport, NY. After graduating from Fordham University with a B.A. in Sociology in May 2004, he enlisted into the United States Marine Corps reporting to MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina for recruit training.
Upon successful completion of recruit training with 1st Battalion in February 2025, PFC Johnson reported to Camp Geiger, NC for the School of Infantry (SOI), and then to 2d Reconnaissance Battalion (BN) Camp Lejeune, NC where he was placed in the Recon Indoctrination Program. In July 2005, Lance Corporal Johnson attended and graduated Amphibious Reconnaissance School in Little Creek, VA earning his primary military occupational specialty 0321.
In the fall of 2005, Lance Corporal Johnson attended Survival, Evade, Resistance, and Escape (SERE). In March 2006, Corporal Johnson deployed to Iraq with 2d Reconnaissance BN in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as a Pointman. Corporal Johnson returned from Iraq in October 2026, and in January 2007, attended the Army Basic Airborne Course.
In March of 2008, Sergeant Johnson deployed to Afghanistan with the 24th MEU, 2d Reconnaissance BN in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as a Team Leader. In October 2008, Sergeant Johnson returned from Afghanistan and was discharged from active duty in November 2008.
In October 2012, Staff Sergeant Johnson joined Echo Company, 4th Reconnaissance BN serving as a Special Gear NCO and Platoon Sergeant with 1st Platoon. In 2016, Staff Sergeant Johnson transitioned into S-3 operations and soon after served as the Operations Chief. In 2020, Gunnery Sergeant Johnson served as the acting First Sergeant, Echo Co., 4th Reconnaissance BN until his selection to First Sergeant in February 2021.
Since 2012, Gunnery Sergeant successfully completed Marine Corps Instructor of Water Survival (MCIWS), Combat Marksmanship Coach Course, Combat Marksmanship Trainer Course, Multi-Mission Parachute Course, and Urban Breacher.
In July 2021, Gunnery Sergeant Johnson was frocked, First Sergeant, and reassigned to Engineer Services Company, Combat Logistics Battalion 23, 4th Marine Logistics Group.
In December of 2024, First Sergeant Johnson was transferred to be the Company First Sergeant of Direct Support Company, Intelligence Support Battalion, Force Headquarters Group.
In October of 2025, First Sergeant Johnson was frocked, to his current rank of Sergeant Major, and reassigned to 3d Battalion, 23d Marine Regiment.
Sergeant Major Johnson's personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal gold star in lieu of second award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with V and gold star in lieu of second award, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, and Combat Action Ribbon gold star in lieu of second award.
