First Sergeant Robert J. Porras

First Sergeant Robert J. Porras is a native of Riverside, Ca. He enlisted into the Marine Corps in June 2006 and he attended recruit training and Marine Combat Training in San Diego, California. He then continued on to Fort Sill, Ok in order to attend Cannon Crewman Course. PFC Porras successfully completed cannon crewman course at the top of his class and was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.  

In January of 2007, LCpl Porras was ordered to 1st Battalion 12th Marines and upon arrival he was sent TAD to serve with 3rd Battalion, 12th Marines, Battery K where he deployed to AR Ramadi, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi freedom. During that time, he served as a machine gunner for a convoy security team. On 1 October 2007 he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. On October 15th Cpl Porras redeployed back to Kaneohe Bay, Hi where he was then assigned to 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, Battery c. 

In October of 2008, Corporal Porras deployed with 1st Battalion, 12th Marines, Battery C to Al-Taqqadum, Iraq. During his tour in Iraq, Cpl Porras served in many billets to include: Armory NCOIC, Convoy Security Team Leader, and Vehicle Commander. In April 2009 Cpl Porras returned from deployment and on 2 May 2009 Cpl Porras was combat meritoriously promoted to the rank of Sergeant.  

In October of 2009 Sgt Porras was selected to drive for the Deputy Commanding General of Marine Forces Pacific. During this time Sgt Porras executed many events where he served as the Protocol NCOIC one event being the 65th Reunion of Honor which was held on Iwo Jima, Japan. Upon completion of the tour of duty as the Deputy Commanding Generals driver he was awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. 

On February 2011 Sgt Porras executed orders to 5th Battalion, 11th Marines, Battery T. There he attended HIMARS Launcher Section Chief Course. In January 2012 Sgt Porras deployed to Leatherneck, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In April of 2012 Sgt Porras redeployed back Camp Pendleton and was selected to serve as an Artillery Training School Instructor in January of 2014. There he served as an instructor, Lead Instructor, and Curriculum developer for the HIMARS Launchers Chiefs Course and the Weapons Instructors Course. In October of 2015 Sgt Porras was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. 

In January of 2016 SSgt Porras was assigned to 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, Battery C to serve as the Guns Platoon Sergeant. In January 2017 SSgt Porras reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island for Drill Instructor School. In April 2017 SSgt Porras was assigned to Lima Company where he served as Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor, and Chief Drill Instructor for 7 cycles of Recruit Training. During his time SSgt Porras was awarder numerous letters of appreciations and certificates of commendations for his performance in Drill and in his ability to instruct the Recruits under his charge. In May 2019 SSgt Porras was selected to serve as the 3rd Battalion Drill Master. In November of 2019 SSgt Porras was promoted to the rank of GySgt. In June of 2020 GySgt Porras finished his tour of duty where he was awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and was ordered to 2nd Battalion 11th Marines.

While serving in 2nd Battalion 11th Marines GySgt Porras served as the Substance Abuse Control Officer as well as the Battery Gunnery Sergeant for Battery F. There he attended Advanced Cannon Crewman Course in Ft. Sill Ok. And in May 2021 he graduated at the top of his class and was awarded a Certificate of Commendation. In August 2021 Gunnery Sergeant Porras executed orders to 1st Battalion 11th Marines where he served as the Battery Gunnery Sergeant for Battery I. During this time Gunnery Sergeant Porras executed multiple exercise to include two Service level training events in 29 Palms, Ca and Bridgeport, Ca. 

Gunnery Sergeant Porras was frocked to First Sergeant on 2 March 2023. First Sergeant Porras executed orders to 4th Law enforcement Battalion in March of 2023 where he currently serves as the I-I First Sergeant for Headquarters and Support(-) Co. 

First Sergeant Porras’ personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star in lieu of second award and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
