First Sergeant Smart is a native of Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in May 2008 as part of the 92-Day Reservist Program while attending college and conducted his recruit training aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. Upon graduation he was meritoriously promoted to Private First Class and reported to 2d Detachment, Communications Company, in Allentown, PA, for service as a field radio operator.
In 2010, Lance Corporal Smart participated in the joint exercise MEDFLAG 10 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Following his meritorious promotion to corporal in March 2011, Corporal Smart voluntarily mobilized in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as a field radio operator assigned to Naval Shock Trauma Platoon, 2d Supply Battalion, 4th Marine Logistics Group, and again in July 2012 with Engineer Company, Combat Logistics Battalion 2.
Returning in February 2013, Sergeant Smart transferred to Bridge Company Bravo in Folsom, PA, for service as the radio chief. In September 2014, he reported to Headquarters and Service Company, Combat Logistics Battalion 25, in Red Banks, NJ, for service as the radio chief, where he participated in four Reserve Integrated Training Exercises aboard MCAGCC Twentynine Palms, CA. In September 2015, he mobilized to Hohenfels, Germany, to serve as a watch chief in support of the Georgian Deployment Program.
In September 2020, Staff Sergeant Smart accepted 12-month active duty operational support orders to augment the Inspector-Instructor staff as the communications chief. Promoted in July 2022, Gunnery Sergeant Smart reported to 4th Civil Affairs Group in Hialeah, FL, for service as the communications chief. Frocked to his present rank, First Sergeant Smart reported to Headquarters Company, 25th Marine Regiment, in November 2024 for service as the company first sergeant.
First Sergeant Smart is a graduate of Moravian University. His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award.
