Captain Vargas holds a bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies from the University of Connecticut. Captain Vargas attended Officer Candidate School in June of 2019 and graduated in August of 2019 where he accepted his commission. Captain Vargas attended The Basic School as a member of Fox Company fifth platoon and graduated in March of 2020. Captain Vargas, selected as an 0802 Field Artillery Officer, attended the Marine Artillery Officer Basic Course (MAOBC) from June of 2020 to November of 2020. Upon graduating MAOBC he attended the Joint Fires Observer (JFO) course and Target Mensuration course (TMO).
Upon graduating from the schoolhouse Captain Vargas moved to Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms as his permanent duty station. His first billet was as a Company Fire Support Officer for Company L, Third Battalion Seventh Marine Regiment leading Lima FiST (Fire Support Team). Captain Vargas served in this role for 4 month before being transferred to Battery K, Third Battalion Eleventh Marine Regiment as a Fire Direction Officer. In addition to being a Fire Direction Officer Captain Vargas was also Battery K's communications officer and was certified in non-lethal weapons.
Captain Vargas deployed as a Fire Direction Officer in Battery K, Battalion Landing Team (BLT) First Battalion Fifth Marine Regiment under the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. Captain Vargas attended Exercise Cobra Gold as a part of a mobile training team with the Royal Thai Marine Corps in February of 2022. He then participated in exercise Noble Arashi in Combined Arms Training Center (CATC) Mt Fuji in March of 2022 alongside the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force.
Captain Vargas returned from deployment and immediately became the Battalion Fire Support Officer for First Battalion Seventh Marine Regiment in June of 2022. The Battalion Fire Support Coordination Center conducted ITX in MCAGCC before deploying on UDP to Okinawa Japan. While deployed he participated in a Battalion FireEx in Yausubetsu Japan with Third Battalion Twelfth Marine Regiment as well as Jungle Warfare Exercise in Okinawa. Captain Vargas then participated in Exercise Blue Sea Marine Corps in Taiwan, serving as an advisor to the Taiwanese Marine Corps and Taiwanese Navy during this period. Returning from Taiwan he assisted in embarkation and planning for Korea Viper and re-deployed to the United States as Weapons Company Executive Officer.
His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
