Sergeant Major Joseph W. Richardson

Sergeant Major Richardson enlisted in the Marine Corps from Newport News, Virginia on the 26th day of June 2001, where he was assigned to Company L, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion. Upon graduating recruit training, he attended Marine Combat Training and Military Occupational Specialty School. Upon graduating MOS school as Honor Graduate, Lance Corporal Richardson was assigned back to his home station as a Vehicle Recovery Operator in Newport News, Virginia until he moved to Texas in 2004 and executed an inter-unit transfer to Weapons Co, 1st Battalion 23rd Marines in Austin, Texas where he served multiple billets within the Headquarters Platoon.

In 2010, Sergeant Richardson was activated to deploy to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. During his pre-deployment training, he was promoted to Staff Sergeant. While serving as the Battalion Motor Transportation Chief during ILOC, Staff Sergeant Richardson received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his performance providing the Battalion with over 200 MRAP and MATV drivers to deploy with. While deployed Staff Sergeant Richardson received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his performance while serving as a watch chief for Task Force Belleau Wood.

Upon returning from Afghanistan, Staff Sergeant Richardson continued to serve as the Battalion Motor Transportation Chief and thereafter was assigned as Company Gunnery Sergeant for Headquarters and Service Company where he served for 2 years.

Staff Sergeant Richardson was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in August of 2016 and began serving as the Battalion Logistics Chief until October of 2017 when he took the billet of Battalion Motor Transport Officer. He held this billet until October of 2018 when he was again selected to serve as the Battalion Logistics Chief until his selection for promotion to 1stSgt Sergeant.

1stSgt Richardson’s first tour as a Unit Senior Enlisted Leader was at Landing Support Company, CLR-45, 4th MLG in Savannah, Georgia. In 2022 he was assigned a subsequent tour to Headquarters and Service Company, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion in San Antonio, Texas where he served until his selection for promotion to Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Richardson graduated from Waldorf University with a Bachelor in Fire Science Administration and is currently employed by the City of Austin, Texas as a professional fire fighter.

Sergeant Major Richardson’s personal awards include The Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal (three awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards) and the Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal (seven awards).
