Major Mariano Alvarado
Inspector-Instructor
Weapons Company, 2d Battalion, 23d Marine Regiment

Major Alvarado is a native of Asunción, Paraguay.  He graduated from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Ca. with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant through the Platoon Leaders Course (PLC) program in October 2008.

Major Alvarado went through basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego from December 1998 to March 1999.  Upon graduation, he attended the Infantry Training Battalion at the School of Infantry (West) from March to May 1999.  

Upon completion of infantry training, Major Alvarado reported to 3d Battalion 1st Marines. He attended small boat coxswain course at Expeditionary Training Group Pacific (EWTGPAC) in September 1999 and deployed with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit from August 2000 to February 2001, participated in Humanitarian Operations in East Timor and Security Operations for the USS Cole in Yemen.  Upon returning from this deployment, Major Alvarado attended Scout Swimmers Course at EWTGPAC from January to February 2002.  Major Alvarado deployed again with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit from June to December 2002 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  He was again deployed as part of Regimental Combat Team 1 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from January to June 2003.  In August 2003, Major Alvarado transitioned from Active Duty to the Individual Ready Reserve.

Major Alvarado attended PLC in June 2007.  Then, he attended The Basic School and Infantry Officer Course from June 2009 to April 2010, and upon graduation, reported to 2d Battalion 4th Marines.  Major Alvarado served as a Platoon Commander, and also served as the Company G Executive Officer during the Battalion’s deployment to Musa Qa’leh, Helmand Province - Afghanistan. 

In October 2012, Major Alvarado received orders to School of Infantry - West, Marine Combat Training Battalion, where he served as Executive Officer and Company Commander.  In June 2014, Major Alvarado assumed duties as the Assistant Operations Officer for the School of Infantry. 

In May 2015, Major Alvarado received orders to 1st Battalion 3d Marines in Kaneohe Bay - Hawaii, where he served as the Company B Company Commander, and in December 2015 deployed to Okinawa, Japan as part of the Forward Deployed Force.  Upon returning from this deployment, Major Alvarado assumed duties as the Weapons Company Commander and attended the Fire Support Coordination Course at Expeditionary Warfare Training Group Atlantic in Virginia Beach, Virginia. 

In December 2016, Major Alvarado assumed duties as the Assistant Operations Officer for the Battalion and deployed to California in support of Integrated Training Exercise. In April 2017, Major Alvarado deployed to Okinawa, Japan as the Deployment Planning OIC for 1st Battalion 3d Marines. 

In 2018, Major Alvarado was transferred to 3d Marine Regiment Headquarters and assumed duties as the Regiment’s training officer.  While serving at 3d Marine Regiment, Major Alvarado participated in the Indonesia Marinir Korps and U.S. Marine Corps Platoon Exchanges in 2018 and 2019.  In July 2020, he received orders to Task Force 51/5 in Bahrain.  While in Bahrain, Major Alvarado served as an Assistant Future Operations planner. 

In July 2021, Major Alvarado received orders to Security Cooperation Office (SCO) at the U.S. Embassy in Lima, Peru.  He currently serves as the SCO Operations Officer, Humanitarian Assistance Program Officer, International Military Student Training Officer, Administrative Officer, and the Budget Officer.

Major Alvarado is a graduate of the Expeditionary Warfare School – Blended Seminar, and the Marine Corps Command and Staff College.  He also completed his MBA through the Naval Postgraduate School’s executive MBA program. His personal decorations include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy Achievement Medal and (3) Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals.
