Major Smith is originally from West Hartford, Connecticut.  He graduated from Avon Old Farms School in 1998 and graduated from Boston College in 2002. He was commissioned through the Officer Candidates Course in 2007.

Upon graduation from the Basic Officer Course and Infantry Officer Course, The Basic School, Major Smith was assigned to 2d Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, Twentynine Palms, California, and served consecutively as a Rifle Platoon Commander, Weapons Platoon Commander, 81mm Mortar Platoon Commander, Assistant Operations Officer, and Company Commander.  During this tour Major Smith deployed  twice to Okinawa, Japan, with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.

In June 2012, Major Smith was assigned to 1st Battalion, 23d Marine Regiment, Austin, Texas, and served as Inspector-Instructor, Weapons Company.  In June 2015, following graduation from the U.S. Army Maneuver Captain Career Course, Fort Benning, Georgia, Major Smith was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3d Marine Regiment, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.  During this tour Major Smith deployed to Okinawa, Japan serving in billets as the Assistant Operations Officer and Company Commander.  In October 2016, Major Smith assumed command of Headquarters Company, 3d Marine Regiment and conducted ITX as part of the Command Element.

In August 2017, Major Smith was assigned to Officer Candidates School and served as the Academics Officer, Company Commander, and Operations Officer.  In June 2020, Major Smith was assigned to 1st Marine Logistics Group as the Tactical Readiness and Training Officer overseeing Marine Corps Combat Readiness Evaluations, Defense Readiness Reporting System, and Major Subordinate Element field exercises and deployments.

In July 2022, Major Smith was assigned to 2d Battalion, 23d Marine Regiment and is serving as Inspector-Instructor, Weapons Company, Seal Beach, CA.

Captain Smith holds a bachelor of communications from Boston College.  His personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (with gold star in lieu of second award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal (with gold star in lieu of second award).
