Captain Michael Sweeney, a native of Mountain Top, Pennsylvania, graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology in August 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps after completing Officer Candidate School in August 2017. Following his graduation from The Basic School, he successfully completed Infantry Officer Course in September 2018.
Upon completing his officer training, 2ndLt Sweeney was assigned to 1st Battalion, 25th Marines at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. He served as the 81mm Mortar Platoon Commander with Weapons Company and additionally as the Weapons Company Executive Officer, supporting the Company Commander and Inspector-Instructor while on Active Duty Operational Support (ADOS) orders. In June 2019, he activated with the Battalion, and after an Integrated Training Exercise (ITX) workup, deployed to the Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) as part of the Unit Deployment Program (UDP) 20.1. While stationed at Camp Schwab, Okinawa, and later Camp Fuji, Japan, 1stLt Sweeney led multiple bilateral training exercises with the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF). He organized and executed several bilateral mortar ranges during Fuji Viper, Forest Light, and Northern Viper exercises.
Following his redeployment in June 2020, Capt Sweeney continued to serve as the 81mm Mortar Platoon Commander and was promoted to Captain in September 2021. In addition to his Selected Marine Corps Reserve (SMCR) responsibilities, he accepted ADOS orders at Headquarters Marine Corps in Arlington, VA, where he worked in the Operations Division under Plans, Policies, and Operations (PP&O) until September 2022.
In October 2022, Capt Sweeney was assigned as the Executive Officer of Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 25th Marines, in Brunswick, ME. He simultaneously held the position of Fire Support Team (FiST) leader, overseeing the FiST package and executing Range 400 during ITX 4-23 in June 2023.
In March 2024, Capt Sweeney transferred to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 25th Marines, in Londonderry, New Hampshire. He assumed command of the company in June 2024 after participating in a Mountain Training Exercise in Bridgeport, California.
