Major Ian Reid was commissioned in March 2012 after graduating from Washington and Lee University with a Bachelor of Arts in Politics. His initial assignment was with 2d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion serving as a Platoon Commander with Bravo and Delta Companies.
In September 2014, Major Reid deployed in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM as the Operations Officer for Marine Corps Forces Central Command Coordination Element – Afghanistan (MCE-A). After successfully retrograding MCE-A from Afghanistan, Major Reid was assigned to Joint Duty with the Combined Joint Task Force, OPERATION INHERENT RESOLVE (CJTF-OIR) in Kuwait as a Battle Captain for the CJ-33.
In October 2015, Maj Reid was assigned to Force Reconnaissance Company, I MEF where he served as the Operations Officer. After graduating the Basic Reconnaissance course, Major Reid returned to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion to serve as the Training Officer, and, subsequently the Assistant Operations Officer. While in this billet, Major Reid deployed with the already underway 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), serving as Operations Officer for the Maritime Raid Force. Following the 11th MEU, Major Reid deployed in support of OPERATION INHERENT RESOLVE with Task Force al Taqaddum, 18.1 where he served as the Assistant Operations Officer.
Following deployment, Major Reid was assigned to the Force Reconnaissance Company, I MEF where he served as a Platoon Commander. In January 2019, he attended the US Army Maneuver Captain’s Career Course.
From November 2019 to May 2021, Major Reid returned to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion and served as the Headquarters and Services Company and Alpha Company Commander.
Major Reid currently serves as the Inspector-Instructor for Company B, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion.
His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2), Joint Service Achievement Medal and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
Major Reid is a graduate of the US Army Cavalry Leader’s Course, Basic Reconnaissance Course, Survival Evasion, Resistance, and Escape Course, US Army Airborne Course, Multi-Mission Parachute Course, Maneuver Captain’s Career Course, Marine Combatant Dive Course, US Army Jumpmaster Course, US Army Military Freefall Jumpmaster Course., Senior Leader Legal Course, Marine Corps Tactics and Operations Group’s Advanced Maneuver Warfare Course, and Marine Corps Command and Staff Distance Education Program
