Captain Tyler G. Cooney currently serves as the Battery Commander for Headquarters Battery, 3d Battalion, 14th Marines (3/14) in Bristol, Pennsylvania. He commissioned through the Officer Candidate Course in November 2014. He then reported to The Basic School in November 2014, and on to Fort Sill, Oklahoma for Field Artillery Officer Basic Course and Joint Fires Observer course.
In December 2015, Second Lieutenant Cooney reported to India Battery, 3d Battalion, 14th Marines, serving as a Forward Observer and Fire Direction Officer for the next eleven months. He then completed a professional development tour at 3d Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment (3/12) in Okinawa, Japan. He served first as the Logistics Officer and Headquarters Platoon Commander at the Jungle Warfare Training Center. For the remainder of the tour, he was the Battery Executive Officer for Headquarters Battery, 3/12.
Upon his return from Okinawa, First Lieutenant Cooney was re-assigned to Battery I, 3/14 as Guns Platoon Commander for a short time. He was voluntarily mobilized in 2018 in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE with Task Force Spartan 19.1. Captain Cooney deployed to Al-Taqqadum, Iraq for seven months in 2019 where he was a Liaison Officer and Foreign Force Advisor embedded with the Iraqi headquarters staff at the Anbar Operations Command Center.
Captain Cooney returned from deployment in November 2019 and was assigned to Battery H, 3/14 in Richmond, Virginia as the Battery Executive Officer where he remained until assuming the role of Assistant Operations Officer, 3/14 in September 2021.
In December 2023, Captain Cooney took command of Headquarters Battery, 3/14.
Captain Cooney is a native of Mount Dora, Florida. He works as a Division Chief for Charleston County Emergency Medical Service. He graduated with honors from Sewanee: the University of the South with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Art in 2009. He is also a graduate of the Expeditionary Warfare School and is pursuing a Master of Science in Emergency Management with expected graduation in May 2024.
Captain Cooney’s personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star in lieu of second award.
