First Sergeant David Bush

Charlie Co. 1st Bn, 23d Marine Regiment

David Bush is a native of San Diego, CA and enlisted in the Marine Corps July 2007 and completed boot camp at MCRD San Diego as part of 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, Lima Company. In June 2008 Private First Class Bush completed Infantry Training Battalion at the School of Infantry, Camp Pendleton as a rifleman earning the MOS of 0311.

Upon completion of ITB he reported to 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, A Co for duty. As a rifleman and Squad Automatic Gunner with 1st Platoon he participated in Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) operating in the Helmand Providence, specifically in Shabu and Taghaz, Afghanistan, from 2009 to 2010.

In September 2010 Lance Corporal Bush became the team and section leader for 1st Platoon Scouts until being assigned as the Lead Platoon Scout for 1st Platoon. In January 2014 Corporal Bush transferred to the IRR to pursue his career in law enforcement.

Sergeant Bush returned to 4th LAR, A Co in January 2016 at which point he attended Light Armored Vehicle Crewman Course, which he graduated in August 2016. Sergeant Bush was assigned as the LAV Gunner for the Platoon Sergeant of 3rd Platoon before moving to a vehicle commander billet. In February 2018 he promoted to Staff Sergeant and served as the platoon sergeant for 1st Platoon.

Staff Sergeant Bush attended Staff Non-Commissioned Officer's Academy Career Course in June 2018. He continued to serve as platoon sergeant until he deployed to Afghanistan in December 2018.

In January 2019 Staff Sergeant Bush activated and deployed as part of the Georgian Liaison Team Rotation 9. He attended and graduated the Marine Advisor Course, subsequently granting him the MOS of Marine Advisor (0571). Staff Sergeant deployed to Bagram, Afghanistan in support of Operation Resolute Support. He served as the team chief of the QRF, Operations Chief, and as a liaison with the 43rd Georgian Infantry Battalion.

Staff Sergeant Bush returned from Afghanistan in December 2019 and served as vehicle commander in 1st Platoon from January 2020 until July 2022. In July 2020 Staff Sergeant Bush attended LAR Leaders Course and obtained the LAR Leader MOS (0363).
In August 2022 he was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant Bush and was assigned as the platoon sergeant for 2nd Platoon and later attended the Staff Non-Commissioned Officer's Academy Advanced Course in July 2023.

Following activation for UDP 24.1 Gunnery Sergeant Bush was assigned as the platoon sergeant for 4th LAR, C Co, 2nd Platoon in September 2023. Gunnery Sergeant Bush was then assigned as the Operations Chief and Detachment Staff Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the CATC Fuji Detachment. Gunnery Sergeant Bush oversaw the maintenance of the equipment assigned to LAR, all LAR training, and LAR personnel issues at CATC Fuji. Gunnery Sergeant Bush also acted as a liaison with the Japanese Ground Self Defense Forces coordinating bi-lateral training and events.

In June 2024 Gunnery Sergeant Bush returned to 4th LAR, A Co and was assigned as the Platoon Commander of 2nd Platoon. As Platoon Commander he led 2nd Platoon during ITX in which he integrated with various units to conduct offensive and defensive exercises.

On November 1, 2025, Gunnery Sergeant Bush was frocked to the rank of First Sergeant. In December 2025 he reported to 1st Battalion, 23rd, Marines, Carlos Company, and was appointed the Company First Sergeant billet.

First Sergeant Bush's personal awards are: Navy And Marine Corps Commendation Medal Combat Conditions “C” Device with Gold Star in lieu of second award, two Certificates Of Commendation, and various other service and campaign medals. First Sergeant Bush holds a Bachelor's of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Arizona State University
