Commander John. F. Landis
Commanding Officer
4th Dental Company

Commander John Landis has a total of 15 combined years of creditable service in the US Navy including 11 active and 4 years with the Reserves.  He is a native of Beaumont, Texas.  He graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing.  Commander Landis entered the Navy in 1998 as a direct accession Nurse Corps officer with the rank of Ensign, and attended Officer Indoctrination School in Newport, Rhode Island in April 1999.   While working on active duty in the intensive care unit at Navy Hospital Jacksonville, he completed pre-requisites for dental school at the University of North Florida.  He then separated from active duty after completion of his service obligation and received a new commission into the Dental Corps with the rank of Lieutenant.  He was selected for a 4-year Health Professions Scholarship Program and graduated from UT Health Science at Houston-Dental Branch in 2007 as a Doctor of Dental Surgery.  He was selected for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency directly from dental school.  He completed the 4-year certificate program at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in 2011.  He was stationed at Navy Hospital Pensacola as the staff Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and the Dental Department Head.  While in Pensacola, he became board certified and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in 2013.  Commander Landis made the difficult decision to separate from active duty in July 2015 and moved to Jacksonville, Florida to join a private practice oral surgery office.  He received a commission into the US Navy Reserves with the rank of Lieutenant Commander in August, 2016.  Since that time, he has been a member of the selected reserves.  After completing a tour as Officer in Charge of Headquarters Detachment for the 24th Dental Company of the 4th Dental Battalion, LCDR Landis was promoted to the rank of Commander on December 1, 2020.  He was subsequently selected as the Executive Officer of the 24th Dental Company beginning March 1, 2021.   Commander Landis received a Navy Commendation Medal in 2011.  He also received a Navy Achievement Medal in 2018 and gold star in lieu of a second award in 2021.
