Captain John M. Sponaugle
INSPECTOR - INSTRUCTOR
Echo Co., 4th Combat Engineer Battalion

Captain Sponaugle is a native of Greeley, Colorado. He graduated from United States Air Force Academy where he earned his Basic Parachutist Insignia and commissioned into the United States Marine Corps in April 2020. Following The Basic School, Second Lieutenant Sponaugle reported to the Engineer School House aboard Camp Lejeune, NC and upon completion received the 1302 MOS, Combat Engineer Officer. Then Second Lieutenant Sponaugle was assigned to 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3d Marine Logistics Group, 3d Marine Expeditionary Force in May 2021.

Second Lieutenant Sponaugle reported to 9th Engineer Support Battalion aboard Marine Corps Base Smedley Butler Okinawa, Japan on 26 May 2021. There he held the billets of Executive Officer, Headquarters and Service Company; Liaison Officer, Commander Task Unit 75.5.1; 2nd Platoon Commander, Engineer Company A; and Company Executive Officer, Engineer Company B. As Liaison Officer, Second Lieutenant Sponaugle integrated multiple operations between Air Force, Navy, and Marine Engineers for Airfield Damage Repair and Humanitarian Civic Action projects. As Platoon Commander, First Lieutenant Sponaugle participated in KAMANDAG 6 leading two joint engineer teams conducting surveys for Engineering Civic Assistance Project, Enhanced Defense Cooperation Arrangement, and Humanitarian Civic Action projects. As Company B Executive Officer, First Lieutenant Sponaugle participated in Korean Marine Exchange Program 23.3 and Resolute Dragon 23.2 working with Joint Forces in the First Island Chain.

First Lieutenant Sponaugle reported to Company E, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion in Bessemer, Alabama on 5 June 2024 as the Inspector-Instructor and Site Commander. First Lieutenant Sponaugle was promoted to Captain on 1 August 2024.

Captain Sponaugle's personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2nd award). He holds a Bachelors of Science in Geospatial Sciences from the United States Air Force Academy.
