First Sergeant Goodson is a native of Augusta, GA. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on 24 August 2009 and attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), Parris Island, South Carolina. After graduating recruit training, he attended Marine Combat Training (MCT) at Camp Geiger, North Carolina. Following completion of MCT, he attended MOS school at MCAGCC 29 Palms, California, for the Field Radio Operator Course. Upon completion of his training, he was assigned the MOS 0621 Field Radio Operator.
In April 2010, Private First Class Goodson reported to Headquarters and Service Company, 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He served as a Field Radio Operator and Training NCO and was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal in November 2010.
In December 2010, Lance Corporal Goodson received TAD orders to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company in 8th ESB. He then received deployment orders in April 2011 for Operation Enduring Freedom. While on deployment, Lance Corporal Goodson was attached to 1st Platoon, EOD Company (FWD) at Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan. During this time, Lance Corporal Goodson served as the Radio Chief, Motor Transport Chief, and Administrative Chief for the platoon. Lance Corporal Goodson was promoted to the rank of Corporal while deployed in September 2011. Corporal Goodson returned in November 2011.
In September 2013, Corporal Goodson received orders to Transmission Training Platoon, Bravo Company, Communications Training Battalion, Marine Corps Communications-Electronics School to assume the billet of MOS Instructor. Corporal Goodson was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in January 2014. During his time as an MOS Instructor, Sergeant Goodson served as a Basic Instructor and Senior Instructor. In November 2015, Sergeant Goodson was awarded Instructor of the Year for Bravo Company and won the meritorious Staff Sergeant board for MCCES. In September 2016, Sergeant Goodson received orders to Drill Instructor School 1-17.
In December 2016, Sergeant Goodson graduated from Drill Instructor School 1-17 and reported to Alpha Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, Recruit Training Regiment, Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. Sergeant Goodson served as a Drill Instructor for three training cycles. Sergeant Goodson was promoted to Staff Sergeant in November of 2017. Staff Sergeant Goodson was assigned to Support Battalion, RTR, MCRD San Diego, where he served as an Academic Instructor and curriculum developer before returning to Alpha Company. Staff Sergeant Goodson completed one additional training cycle as a Drill Instructor and three training cycles as a Senior Drill Instructor, earning recognition for multiple achievements including two Honor Platoons. Staff Sergeant Goodson completed his tour as a Marine Corps Martial Arts Program Instructor for Support Battalion.
In January 2020, after a successful tour as a Drill Instructor, Staff Sergeant Goodson received orders to Marine Wing Communications Squadron-38, assuming the billet of SNCOIC/MUX Chief for Alpha Detachment. On January 1, 2022, he was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. In April 2023, Gunnery Sergeant Goodson deployed to Palau in support of Operation Valiant Shield as the Communications Chief and Senior Enlisted Advisor. Upon his return, he was assigned as the Communications Chief of Alpha Detachment, MWCS-38.
In January 2023, Gunnery Sergeant Goodson received orders to execute a second tour at MCRD San Diego. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, Bravo Company as a Chief Drill Instructor and Company First Sergeant. In March 2024, GySgt Goodson was assigned as the Company First Sergeant for Delta Company. In July 2024, Gunnery Sergeant Goodson was requested to be transferred and serve as an instructor at Drill Instructor School to serve as the Basic Warrior Training Instructor. During his time at Drill Instructor School, he was selected and promoted to his current rank of First Sergeant, subsequently receiving orders to 2d Bn 23rd Marine Regiment, Fox Company in Camp Williams, UT. He is currently serving as the Inspector-Instructor First Sergeant for Fox Company.
First Sergeant Goodson's personal decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, and the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with three bronze stars in lieu of fourth award.
