Sergeant Major Joseph A. Porter
Command Senior Enlisted Leader
1st Battalion, 23d Marines

First Sergeant Porter entered the Marine Corps Delayed Enlistment Program in May 2003.  In October 2003 he shipped to MCRD San Diego for recruit training.  Following recruit training, Private First Class Porter reported to Marine Combat Training aboard Camp Pendleton, CA and upon completion he transitioned to 29 Palms, CA to attend Field Radio Operators Course. Private First Class Porter graduated in the top 5% of his class and received the Field Radio Operator (0621) MOS. Private First Class Porter then reported to Fox Battery, 2nd Battalion 14th Marines 4th Marine Division in Oklahoma City, OK as this was his reserve unit.  Private First Class Porter was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal in August 2004.

In June 2005, Lance Corporal Porter was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Corporal.

Corporal Porter held the billet of Battery Guide. Corporal Porter completed numerous Marine Corps Institute courses to include Sergeant’s Non-Resident Course.  In March 2007, Corporal Porter deployed to Anbar Province, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. While deployed to Iraq Corporal Porter was the Commanding Officer’s driver and in September 2007 Corporal Porter was combat meritoriously promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

Upon return from Iraq, Sergeant Porter attended Marine Corps Martial Arts Program Instructor School in Belton, MO.

Sergeant Porter was selected to the rank of Staff Sergeant in December 2011 and transferred to 14th Marine Regiment aboard NAS/JRB Fort worth, TX. Staff Sergeant Porter held the billet of Platoon Sergeant for Communications Platoon and attended SNCO Academy Career Course in Quantico, VA, where he graduated in the top 5% of his class. Staff Sergeant Porter was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant in February 2015 and attended SNCO Academy Advanced Course in Quantico, VA, where he graduated in the top 5% of his class. Gunnery Sergeant Porter filled the billets of Battery Gunnery Sergeant and acting First Sergeant.

After successful completion of his tour at 14th Marine Regiment Gunnery Sergeant Porter transferred to Headquarters and Service Company 3rd Battalion 23rd Marines 4th Marine Division in Bridgeton, MO, in April 2018. Gunnery Sergeant Porter was given the billets of Reserve Communications Chief and acting First Sergeant.  

Gunnery Sergeant Porter was frocked to First Sergeant in April 2019 and moved to Headquarters and Service Company 4th Reconnaissance Battalion 4th Marine Division in San Antonio, TX.  During this period First Sergeant Porter completed the First Sergeants Course in Quantico, VA. Frocked First Sergeant Porter had his promotion ceremony and became First Sergeant Porter in December 2019. First Sergeant Porter has since attended the First Sergeants Symposium and completed the required First Sergeant/Master Sergeant Seminar.

First Sergeant Porter earned a Navy and Marine Corps achievement medal upon successful completion of his tour with H&S Company, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion. First Sergeant Porter was then transferred to Anti-Tank Training Company, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division in Broken Arrow, OK. 

First Sergeant Porter earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Exercise and Human Performance and has a State of Oklahoma teaching certification in Secondary Schools Education.
