Colonel Anthony "Fuzzy" Sferrazza
Commanding Officer
Headquarters Battalion

Col Sferrazza is a native of New York City.  He attended St. John's University, New York graduating and commissioning in 2002.  1stLt Sferrazza earned his wings in 2005 and selected the CH-46E.  In 2005, 1stLt Sferrazza joined HMM-365, the “Blue Knights” at MCAS New River, North Carolina for his first fleet tour.  Within weeks, he deployed as part of a Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force supporting Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in New Orleans, Louisiana.  In 2006, the squadron composited as HMM-365 (REIN) with 24th MEU (SOC) embarked aboard USS IWO JIMA.  There he participated in numerous operations including the evacuation of nearly 15,000 American citizens from Beirut, Lebanon during the 2006 Lebanon War.  Capt Sferrazza once again deployed with 24th MEU in 2008 to Operation ENDURING FREEDOM under NATO-ISAF. He participated in Operation AZADA WOSA supporting BLT 1/6 in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.  In 2008, Capt Sferrazza was selected for transition to MV-22B and joined VMMT-204, MCAS New River.  Capt Sferrazza quickly returned to the fleet as Assistant Operations Officer with the “Black Knights” of VMM-264. There, he participated in the initial stand up of the newly designated tiltrotor squadron culminating with their 2010 deployment to Operation ENDURING FREEDOM in Afghanistan.

Capt Sferrazza transitioned to the Reserve Component as the first SMCR MV-22B pilot, participating in the standup of the VMMT-204 Squadron Augmentation Unit, MATSG-42.  As Officer in Charge, he facilitated both initial reserve tiltrotor capabilities and aircrew training for the fleet.  Maj Sferrazza accessed into the Active Reserve and reported to the “Wild Geese” of HMM-774 in Norfolk, Virginia in 2015.  As the Operations Officer, he oversaw the divestment of the CH-46E and the squadron’s re-designation as VMM-774 directing operations enabling the squadron to complete the transition.  Maj Sferrazza assumed duty as Executive Officer in June of 2017 where the squadron supported relief efforts in the wake of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.  

LtCol Sferrazza assumed command of VMM-774 in June of 2018.  In that time, the “Wild Geese” supported the International Sea Symposium aboard the USS NEW YORK, MARSOC Raven Exercise in Clarksville, Tennessee, a squadron training detachment to Pensacola, Florida; and fleet support to II MEF during Hurricane Florence.  As the Commanding Officer, LtCol Sferrazza activated VMM-774 for the first time as a tiltrotor squadron in June of 2019 and subsequently deployed to Moron, Spain in support of SPMAGTF-CR-AF 20.1. Designated as the Aviation Combat Element (ACE) commander, LtCol Sferrazza brought together four detachments under one command ensuring successful support for SPMAGTF-CR-AF missions and multi-national exercises. Throughout the deployment, VMM-774 (REIN) conducted numerous exercises with NATO partner countries, including Spain, Italy, Portugal, France, as well as operations aboard the Juan Carlos I, executing more than 2,180 mishap free flight hours. Of note, the ACE supported U.S. diplomatic missions to Libya on multiple occasions.  Following the squadron’s successful return, LtCol Sferrazza relinquished command and reported to NATO Defense College in Rome, Italy.

Upon graduation, LtCol Sferrazza reported to MARFORRES in March 2021 where he was assigned as the G-3/5 Operations & Plans Officer overseeing Global Force Management and exercises for the Force.  In 2023, Col Sferrazza was assigned as the MARFORRES AC/S G-3/5 before taking command of Headquarters Battalion Marine Forces Reserve in June 2024.  Col Sferrazza's personal awards include Meritorious Service Medal (gold star in lieu of second award), Individual Air Medal with V, Air Medal with Strike Flight numeral 6, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (gold star in lieu of second award) and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
