Lieutenant Colonel Ryan P. Kenny assumed command of 2nd Battalion, 24th Marines, 23rd Marine Regiment on November 13, 2021. 

Lieutenant Colonel Kenny is a native of Elmhurst, IL. He graduated from Millikin University in 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and subsequently commissioned via Officer Candidates School and accepted a commission in March 2004. Assigned the Ground Intelligence Officer MOS at The Basic School, he attended the Infantry Officer Course, Scout Sniper Commander Course, and Ground Intelligence Officer Course before reporting to the G2 3d Marine Division at Camp Courtney, Okinawa as an Assistant Intelligence Officer where he participated in Exercise Ulchi Focus Lens (UFL).

In May 2005, 2nd Lieutenant Kenny successfully screened for the 3d Reconnaissance Battalion and was sent to Amphibious Reconnaissance School (ARS), Army Airborne School, and S.E.R.E. before returning to Camp Schwab, Okinawa. In March 2006 he was promoted to the rank of 1st Lieutenant and assigned as executive officer Alpha Company, 3d Recon Battalion. He deployed with Alpha Company to Al Anbar Province in August 2006.

Following the Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) deployment, 1st Lieutenant Kenny received orders to Marine Corps Recruiting Station Saint Louis, MO. He served as the executive officer and was promoted to the rank of Captain in July 2008. Captain Kenny completed his tour with the recruiting station and transitioned from active duty to the reserves in July 2010. As a reservist, he remained with Recruiting Station St. Louis as the reserve support officer until March 2012.

In June 2012, Captain Kenny reported to 3d Battalion, 23d Marine Regiment and served as the Weapons Company Commander and battalion fire support coordinator. In January 2015, he was promoted to Major and assigned as the Battalion Operations Officer where he deployed to the Integrated Training Exercise 4-16 in 29 Palms, California. During his time as Operations Officer, in addition to ITX 4-16, he oversaw the execution of two OCONUS annual training events as well as the SPMAGTF-SC deployment.

Major Kenny left 3d Battalion, 23d Marines and attended the Distance Education Weekend Seminar Program for Command and Staff from October 2018 to May 2020. During this time, he concurrently served as the reserve support officer for the 9th Marine Corps District (9MCD) in Great Lakes Naval Base, Illinois. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in January 2021 and reported to MAGTF Staff Training Program at Quantico, Virginia in April 2021 where he served as a MAGTF Intelligence Planner and the Assistant Operations Officer.

In his civilian career, Lieutenant Colonel Kenny worked in the operations center for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) as a contingency planner from 2010 through 2016. Since 2017, he has lived in Chicago and works for Boeing at the corporate headquarters in the area of systems administration and compliance. He received his Masters in Business Administration from St. Louis University in 2014.

Lieutenant Colonel Kenny's personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star in lieu of second award, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
