Lieutenant Colonel Matthew R. Munroe
Commanding Officer
4th Combat Engineer Battalion

Lieutenant Colonel Munroe commissioned in 2008 after completing the PLC Jr/Sr curriculum and graduating from Maine Maritime Academy with a degree in Marine Engineering. He completed TBS in December of 2008 and graduated 5th in his class and was subsequently assigned to be a Combat Engineer Officer. He graduated from CEOC in April of 2009 as the honor graduate and reported to MWSS-172 as the Construction Platoon Commander in May 2009 and Engineer Operations Company Executive Officer in 2010.

Lieutenant Munroe then assumed command of Engineer Maintenance Company, 3d Maintenance Battalion in 2011 and led the company for a year before volunteering for an IMA deployment to Afghanistan in May of 2012. Lieutenant Munroe was promoted to Captain in country and served as the Ground Combat Element liaison for the R4OG, responsible for the accountability, consolidation, and return of all GCE equipment from SW Afghanistan during the drawdown of 2012.

Returning to the United States in 2013, Captain Munroe was selected as the Marine Officer Instructor for The University of Arizona. He served as adjunct faculty in the Naval Science department and Operation Officer for the unit until September of 2016 when he transitioned from the Active to Reserve Component.

Captain Munroe served with the Marine Corps Installations-West Emergency Operations Center (EOC) from 2016-2018. He participated in regular mock exercises for active shooter, earthquake, flooding, forest fires, and chemical spill aboard or near Camp Pendleton and served as deputy liaison to the San Diego County EOC. The IMA detachment was mobilized in support of the Lilac Fire in southern California.

In 2018, Captain Munroe promoted to Major and was selected to attend resident PME at the Marine Corps University for Command & Staff College. Major Munroe graduated as a distinguished graduate and with a Masters in Military Studies in 2019. Major Munroe then accepted one-year follow-on orders to the Office of Naval Research, where he worked as the Marine Corps Liaison to Code 31, Maritime Platforms.

In 2020, Major Munroe returned to the civilian workforce and took Company Command a second time at Engineer Support Company, 6th Engineer Support Battalion. He served in that role from September 2020 to February 2022.

Major Munroe served as the Battalion Executive Officer at 4th Combat Engineer Battalion from February of 2022 to January 2024 when he transitioned to HQMC under the Deputy Commandant for Installations & Logistics as a Logistics Planner. Major Munroe was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in February of 2025.
