Lieutenant Colonel Christopher M. Scannell
Commanding Officer
4th Combat Engineer Battalion

Lieutenant Colonel Scannell was commissioned in 2005 through the NROTC program at Cornell University. He holds an MS degree in Civil Engineering from The Ohio State University, a Master’s in Military Studies from Marine Corps University, and a Master of Public Administration degree through Franklin University.

After commissioning as a Second Lieutenant, he attended The Basic School and Engineer Officer’s Course, and in 2006 was stationed with 7th Engineer Support Battalion (ESB) at Camp Pendleton, CA, where he served as Platoon Commander, 2nd Platoon, Charlie Company. In 2007, after promotion to First Lieutenant and a brief time as company XO, he was assigned to Border Transition Team (BTT) 4224 for deployment to Anbar Province, Iraq in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 08-2. He returned to 7th ESB as Assistant Operations Officer and was promoted to Captain prior to his separation from Active Duty in September 2009. From 2009-2011, then Captain Scannell attended the Expeditionary Warfare School distance education program as a member of the Inactive Ready Reserve (IRR). In 2011, he affiliated with the Select Marine Corps Reserve as Engineer Company Commander, MWSS 471, Detachment B. Shortly thereafter he mobilized as the Company Commander, Engineer Company, Combat Logistics Battalion-2 for deployment in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM 12-2.

From 2013-2015, he served as Company Commander, Bridge Company A, 6th ESB at Battle Creek, MI. He was promoted to Major in June 2015. Upon completion of the Marine Corps Command and Staff College resident program in 2016, then Major Scannell joined the Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group as a CENTCOM area regional planner. He holds the 0571 Advanced Foreign Security Force Advisor MOS.

In 2019, he transferred to FIRST Naval Construction Regiment to serve as the Senior Marine Advisor, a position held within the Individual Mobilization Augmentation (IMA) detachment to Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, Little Creek, Virginia. Lieutenant Colonel Scannell assumed command of 4th Combat Engineer Battalion in April 2023.

As a civilian, Lieutenant Colonel Scannell is a Design and Construction Manager for the City of Columbus, OH, and is a licensed professional engineer in the States of Ohio and Michigan.

His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Select Marine Corps Reserve Medal, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with “M” device.
