Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Smith is a native of Omaha, Nebraska. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps in 2004 following graduation from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. In 2004, he completed The Basic School and graduated from the Logistics Officers Course in 2005.
In 2005, he reported to Combat Logistics Battalion 7 in Twentynine Palms, California and served there from 2005 to 2008 as a Platoon Commander, the Battalion Adjutant and the Battalion Operations Officer. Lieutenant Smith deployed to Iraq in 2006 with the Battalion, and again to Iraq in 2007 as the primary military logistics advisor to the 5th Battalion of the 3rd Iraqi Border Patrol Brigade.
In 2008, Lieutenant Smith reported for Inspector Instructor duty at Marine Wing Support Group 47 in Detroit, Michigan. While with the Group, he served as the Logistics Officer, Assistant Operations Officer, and Headquarters Company Commander. Also during this tour, he completed the Aviation Ground Support Weapons and Tactics Instructor course and non-resident Expeditionary Warfare School.
Starting in June of 2011, Captain Smith served as the Battalion Logistics Officer for the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion “Highlanders” in Camp Pendleton, California. He deployed with the Battalion to Helmand Province, Afghanistan from November 2011 to May 2012. Following this tour, he was selected to attend the Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 2014.
In 2015, Major Smith reported to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and assumed duties as the MEU S-4. While with the MEU, he supported a humanitarian assistance mission in Haiti, a defense support to civil authorities mission in Puerto Rico, and deployed with the USS Bataan Amphibious Readiness Group in 2017, supporting combat operations in Libya, Yemen and Syria.
In June of 2018, Major Smith reported to Headquarters Marine Corps and served two years as the Deputy Military Assistant to the 34th and 35th Assistant Commandants of the Marine Corps. He then served as a Logistics Program Analyst within the Programs and Resources Department from July 2020 to May 2021.
Lieutenant Colonel Smith’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with Gold Star, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 3 Gold Stars, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
