Lieutenant Colonel John B. Naughton

6th Engineer Support Battalion

LtCol Naughton graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2005 and commissioned as a Second Lieutenant.  Upon graduation from The Basic School and the Combat Engineer Officers Course in 2006, he reported to Marine Wing Support Squadron-273 (MWSS-273) in Beaufort, SC.  While with MWSS-273, he served as Engineer Platoon Commander, Heavy Equipment Platoon Commander, and Engineer Company Commander, and deployed twice to Al Anbar and Ninewa Provinces in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In June 2009, LtCol Naughton began Foreign Area Officer (FAO) training in Monterey, CA.  After graduating from the Naval Postgraduate School and Defense Language Institute, he reported to U.S. Embassy Tunis, Tunisia in November 2011 for in-country training.  In June 2012, he reported to Marine Corps Training Mission-United Arab Emirates, where he served as an advisor for the Emirati Presidential Guard.

Upon completion of FAO training, LtCol Naughton reported to 8th Engineer Support Battalion (ESB) in Camp Lejeune, NC in December 2012, and assumed command of Bridge Company.  In March 2013, he detached from 8th ESB, and attached to II Marine Expeditionary Force Advisor Training Cell for pre-deployment training with a brigade-level Security Force Assistance Advisor Team (SFAAT).  In October 2013, he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom with SFAAT 2-215 to Sangin, Afghanistan, where he served as Garrison Support Unit Advisor and Anti-Terrorism Force Protection Officer.  He redeployed in May 2014, and assumed command of Engineer Support Company, 8th ESB.

In June 2015, LtCol Naughton executed orders to the U.S. Naval Academy, where he served as the Political Science Department Associate Chair and Men’s Hockey Officer Representative.  In May 2018, he reported to the Afghanistan-Pakistan Hands Program in Arlington, VA, and began Dari language training at Defense Language Institute-Washington.  He deployed in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel to Helmand Province, Afghanistan in October 2018, and attached to Task Force Southwest as the Lead Governance Advisor until redeploying in July 2019.

In August 2019, LtCol Naughton executed orders to Marine Corps Forces Central Command (MARCENT) in Tampa, FL, where he served in the G-5 as an Exercise Planner and Security Cooperation Desk Officer.  While at MARCENT, he participated in Exercise Native Fury 20 and supported Operation Allies Refuge at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar.

LtCol Naughton has a Bachelor of Science in International Relations from the U.S. Naval Academy and a Master of Arts in Security Studies-Middle East/North Africa from Naval Postgraduate School.  He is a graduate of the Expeditionary Warfare School DEP, and the Command and Staff College DEP.  His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon
