Lieutenant Colonel Michael D. Simon
3rd Battalion, 25th Marines

LtCol Simon is a native of North Canton, Ohio. He completed his undergraduate education in 2003 at the United States Naval Academy, earning a Bachelor of Science in Oceanography. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 2003.

LtCol Simon’s operational commands include service as a Platoon Commander in 3d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division (2004-2007), Company Commander in 3d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division (2010-2011), and Company Commander in 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division (2011-2013).

His staff assignments and non-operational command assignments include service as a Company Commander for Company G, Marine Combat Training Battalion; Officer in Charge of LAV Crewman Course and Company Executive Officer, LAV Training Company, Advanced Infantry Training Battalion within the School of Infantry - West (2007-2009); Joint Information Operations Plans Officer for IO and Space Integration Branch, Plans and Strategy Division within Plans, Policies, and Operations, Headquarters Marine Corps (2015-2018); Deputy Director for Training J7, Combined Joint Forces Land Component Command, Combined Joint Task Force OIR (2017-2018); Executive Officer for 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division (2018-2019); and Information Operations Section Head for the Fires and Effects Coordination Center within I Marine Expeditionary Force (2019-2020).

LtCol Simon has deployed twice in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM (2004/05 and 2006), and OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM – AFGHANISTAN (2010/11 and 2011/12), and once in support of OPERATION INHERENT RESOLVE (2017/18).

He is a graduate of the Expeditionary Warfare School, Command and Staff College (Distance Education Program), and the Naval Postgraduate School where he earned a Master of Science in Information Warfare Systems Engineering.

LtCol Simon’s personal awards include the Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat “V” and two gold stars, Combat Action Ribbon with two gold stars and various unit and campaign citations.
