Major Bates assumed the duties Anti-Tank Training Company Commander in October 2020. A native of Montclair, Virginia, he graduated from the University of Mary Washington and commissioned in May 2007. He previously served as the 3/25 H&S Company Commander from July 2019 to September 2020.
Upon completion of the Infantry Officers Course, Major Bates reported to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment to assume duties as first platoon commander, India Company in September 2008. During a significant portion of the pre-deployment training, Major Bates served as the weapons platoon commander. Major Bates deployed as a rifle platoon commander in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) with 3/6 from January 2010 to August 2010. He participated in Operation MOSHTARAK in Marjah, Helmand Province as part of the Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Afghanistan. Upon return, Major Bates reported to Headquarters Company, 6th Marine Regiment to assume the duties of the Company Executive Officer until his EAS in September 2011.
Directly from active duty, Major Bates affiliated with the Marine Corps Systems Command IMA Det and mobilized in November 2011. Major Bates deployed Camp Leatherneck in support of OEF as the in theater Liaison Officer (LNO) for the Counter RCIED Electronic Warfare program office from December 2011 to July 2012. Upon return, Major Bates moved to the Command’s Operations Cell where he was the focal point for the Command’s deployed LNOs and OEF MAGTF staff officers. He demobilized in September 2013 and joined 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines in January 2014. Upon arrival Major Bates assumed command of H&S Company in Brook Park, Ohio. In August 2014, Major Bates led H&S Company through Exercise Heavy Metal 14 at Fort A.P. Hill, VA. In February 2015 Major Bates was reassigned to Weapons Company to serve as the Executive Officer. During this tour, Weapons Company successfully completed exercises ITX 4-15, Northern Strike 16, and Nordic Frost 17. In January of 2018 Major Bates was assigned duties as the OIC for the GDP-RSM Rotation 8 Georgia Liaison Team. He was mobilized on 1 June 2018 and deployed to Bagram Airfield in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel with the 22nd Georgian Infantry Battalion until 1 May 2019. Upon return from Afghanistan, he reassumed command of H&S Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines. Major Bates led H&S Company through exercise Trojan Strike 20 and relinquished command in September 2020. In October 2020, he assumed duties as Commanding Officer of Anti-Tank Training Company, 25th Marine Regiment.
Major Bates has completed The Basic School, Infantry Officer Course, Summer Mountain Leaders Course, Expeditionary Warfare School (Distance Education Program), Marine Advisor Course, and Command and Staff College (Blended Seminar Program). Personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. In his civilian career, Major Bates works as a project officer at Marine Corps System Command. He is married and has three daughters.
