SgtMaj Michael P. McCoy enlisted in the Marine Corps in Boston, Massachusetts on February 26, 1999.
After completing recruit training at Parris Island, SC and the School of Infantry (SOI) on Camp Lejeune, NC SgtMaj McCoy was assigned to the 5th Marine Regiment and reported to Camp Pendleton, CA in August 1999
From August 1999 to September 2003, SgtMaj McCoy held multiple billets ranging from automatic rifleman, Squad Leader, Assistant Chief Scout Swimmer and Instructor - Career Orientation and Training of Midshipmen (CORTRAMID) while assigned to India Co 3/5 and Fox Co 2/4. During this period, SgtMaj McCoy deployed twice with Battalion Landing Team (BLT) 2/4, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). SgtMaj McCoy was meritoriously promoted to Corporal on June 2, 2001.
Upon completing four and a half years of active-duty service, SgtMaj McCoy transferred to the Inactive Ready Reserve (IRR). In May 2005 SgtMaj McCoy volunteered for mobilization as a combat replacement and deployment to Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) as a member of Personal Security Detachment 1 (PSD), Regimental Combat Team 8 (RCT 8). SgtMaj McCoy returned to OIF in September 2007 as a member of 4th Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion (LAR) serving as Squad Leader and Platoon Sergeant in the next two phases of the campaign. SgtMaj McCoy was promoted to Sergeant on April 1, 2006.
From October 2008 to May 2011, SgtMaj McCoy served with Alpha Co 1/25 and Alpha and Headquarters & Service (H&S) Co 4th LAR as a Scout Team Leader, Platoon Sergeant and Assistant Operations Chief. SgtMaj McCoy was promoted to Staff Sergeant on September 1, 2009.
From June 2011 to May 2012 then again from September 2012 to August 2013, SgtMaj McCoy was assigned to Marine Corps Forces Central Command (MARCENT) and deployed with Security Cooperation Team-Jordan (SCT-J) as a Foreign Security Force (FSF) Advisor earning the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of (0571). SgtMaj McCoy served as lead cadre instructor and later as team SNCOIC deploying to Afghanistan, with Jordanian Task Force 300C and 300D.
Soon after returning from his second security cooperation deployment, SgtMaj McCoy was assigned to Wounded Warrior Battalion-West (WWBN-W), Detachment Balboa - Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) from June 2014 to April 2018 where he served as Section Leader, Platoon Sergeant and completed his near four-year tour with the battalion as detachment Gunnery Sergeant. SgtMaj McCoy was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant on May 1, 2015.
In June 2018, SgtMaj McCoy was again assigned to MARCENT, Marine Coordination Element-Kuwait (MCE-K) where he served as reception center chief from July 2018 to February 2019 and as Senior Enlisted Advisor (SEA) from February 2019 to July 2019 and again as SEA from August 2019 to June 2020. SgtMaj McCoy transferred back to the Selected Marine Corps Reserve (SMCR) and was frocked to First Sergeant on July 1, 2020.
SgtMaj McCoy served as Battery 1stSgt of November Battery 5/14 in Seal Beach, CA from July 2020 to February 2023. SgtMaj McCoy then transferred to H&S 2/23 in Pasadena, CA where he served as Company 1stSgt until he was selected for Sergeant Major in August 2024.
SgtMaj McCoy assumed his current duty as Command Senior Enlisted Leader (CSEL), 6th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA on October 20, 2024.
SgtMaj McCoy’s personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award and the Combat Action ribbon.
