Lieutenant Colonel Stuart C. Smith Jr.
Commanding Officer, 6th Communication Battalion
Originally from Newburgh, New York, Lieutenant Colonel Smith graduated from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice in May 1996. Commissioned in April 1999, he then completed The Basic School in October 1999. After graduating from the Communication Information Systems Officers Course in August 2000, he reported to 1st Force Service Support Group (1st FSSG), I Marine Expeditionary Force, in Camp Pendleton, California. For the next three years, he served the command in a variety of assignments to include the 1st FSSG Information Assurance Officer, the Radio Platoon Commander, Executive Officer, and Operations Officer for Communications Company. In February 2003, he deployed to Kuwait and Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In July 2003, Lieutenant Colonel Smith reported to the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), in Arlington, Virginia for duty as a Joint C4 Project Officer. While assigned to DISA, he served two additional assignments in Iraq and one in Afghanistan.
He left active duty service in October 2006 and subsequently affiliated with the Selected Marine Corps Reserve. In December 2006, he was assigned as an Individual Mobilization Augmentee (IMA) with Communications School in Quantico, Virginia. In March 2008, he accepted temporary orders to active duty as an Instructor for Communications School. In July 2008, he reported to the resident Expeditionary Warfare School (EWS) and subsequently graduated in May 2009. While attending resident EWS, he also graduated from the Advanced Communication Officers Course (ACOC).
Upon graduation, Lieutenant Colonel Smith was reassigned to Communications School in Quantico, Virginia as an IMA. In June 2011, he graduated from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College Distance Education Program. In November 2011, he accepted an assignment with 6th Communication Battalion where he served as the Company Commander for Support Company and went on to serve as the Operations Officer for 6th Communication Battalion. During his time with 6th Communication Battalion, he participated in a number of exercises to include Javelin Thrust-2012, Africa Endeavor-2013, PANAMAX-2014, and Austere Challenge-2015.
In July 2015, Lieutenant Colonel Smith reported to senior level college at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, and subsequently graduated in June 2016 with a Masters of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies.
Lieutenant Colonel Smith is employed by the United States Marshals Service as a Supervisory Deputy United States Marshal. His primary role is to lead investigators who are responsible for protecting the federal judiciary, and investigating, locating, and apprehending violent federal, state, and local fugitives.
His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, gold star in lieu of second award, and numerous campaign and service awards.
