Sergeant Major Grinter enlisted in the Marine Corps in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He graduated Recruit Training in December 1993 as a Private First Class. After completing Recruit Training, he reported to Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry, Camp Pendleton California.

PFC Grinter completed infantry training and was later assigned further training at the Light Armored Vehicle Company, as an LAV Crewman. Upon completion of training PFC Grinter was given orders and reported to 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Twentynine Palms California in March 1994.

While serving with 3D LAR BN LCpl Grinter held the billet of Gunnar on an LAV-25. From May to November 1995 Corporal Grinter participated in a Unit Deployment Program deployment to Okinawa Japan. Upon completion of the deployment Corporal Grinter was assigned as a Vehicle Commander on an LAV-25. Corporal Grinter attended both the LAV Vehicle Commander’s course and Corporal’s Course in 1996.

Sgt Grinter was then transferred to 1st BN 5th MAR as a section leader for the LAR Plt for deployment with 31st MEU from May to November 1997. During the deployment the MEU participated in Exercise Cobra Gold in Thailand. Upon return from deployment Sgt Grinter transferred to the Individual Ready Reserve.

Sgt Grinter then joined Weapons Company 1st BN 23D MAR in Austin Texas. Sgt Grinter was then transferred to Detachment A Company B for mobilization and deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The Detachment completed the Marine Corps Security Forces School in Chesapeake VA, then deployed to assume the security mission at US Naval Base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba from Jan to Dec 2002. Upon completion of the deployment as a Platoon Sergeant, Sgt Grinter stayed with Bravo Company 1st BN 23 MAR.

Sgt Grinter was mobilized and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II from May 2004 to April 2005 with 1st BN 23d MAR. The Battalion was assigned as part of Regimental Combat Team 7 in Al Anbar Province Iraq. Company B was later attached to 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion for combat operations in Fallujah and Ramadi. In March of 2005 he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon completion of the deployment SSgt Grinter held the billet of Platoon Commander and Company Gunnery Sergeant.

GySgt Grinter transferred to Headquarters Company, Headquarters Battalion,4th Marine Division in August of 2010. GySgt Grinter was assigned as the Training Chief and Company Gunnery Sergeant. GySgt Grinter attended the Advanced Staff NCO Academy at Quantico, VA in 2012.

First Sergeant Grinter was promoted and reported to India Company 3rd BN 23D MAR, Little Rock AR in June 2013. In June 2014 India Co was selected to represent 4th Marine Division in Exercise Western Accord in Senegal, Africa. In May 2016 First Sergeant Grinter transferred to Headquarters Battery, 2nd BN 14th MAR.

In May 2018 Sergeant Major Grinter was promoted to his current rank and assumed duties as Squadron SgtMaj with Marine Medium Tilt Rotor Squadron 764, MAG-41, 4th MAW. While at VMM-764 the Squadron supported four Annual Training events including, ITX, Sentinel Edge and Kodiak Arctic Care. In July 2021 Sergeant Major Grinter assumed his current assignment at Marine Aircraft Group 41.

Sergeant Major Grinter’s personal decorations include Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device and 3 Gold Stars, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and The Combat Action Ribbon.
