Carlos Munoz, a Civil Affairs Marine assigned to 3d Civil Affairs Group, teaches American Sign Language (ASL) to a deaf Afghan child, Fatemeh, and her family on Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, February 2, 2022. Fatemeh is 3 years old and the region of Afghanistan her family comes from has no support or schools for children like her. Her family is being relocated to Maryland where they can continue learning ASL. The Department of Defense, through U.S. Northern Command, and in support of the Department of Homeland Security, is providing transportation, temporary housing, medical screening, and general support for at least 50,000 Afghan guests at suitable facilities, in permanent or temporary structures, as quickly as possible. Black Belt Spartans - Marines with 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, run to the next sparring checkpoint during a Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) black belt culminating event at Fort Pickett, Virginia on Jan. 29, 2022. The culminating event included a five mile run, various exercise stations, and sparring matches where Marines used techniques learned throughout their MCMAP training. Plans for Marine Corps Reserve to Take On Expanded Role in Partnership with II MEF Underway - Col. Victor Pastor, Assistant Chief of Staff, G-3/5, 4th Marine Division, discusses force design and establishing a crisis response force Dec. 15, 2021, at Marine Corps Support Facility New Orleans. II MEF and MARFORRES are the Marine Corps’ service-retained forces administratively and operationally controlled by the Marine Corps instead of a combatant command, such as most Marines stationed in California and Japan who are aligned to support U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. The importance of these operational planning teams is to establish the process needed to create an effective service-retained crisis response force to respond to global threats outside of USINDOPACOM area of responsibility.
