U.S. Marine Corps to activate first-ever innovation unit, host innovation roundtable event

The U.S. Marine Corps is set to host the formal activation ceremony of the service’s first-ever Marine Innovation Unit and a co-located Defense Innovation Roundtable, to be held at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, New York, on Friday, May 5, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. EST.

The Marine Innovation Unit will be formally activated in accordance with military tradition to accelerate advanced capabilities, transform Naval Service capacity for technology employment, and retain and invest in highly skilled Marines in support of Force Design 2030 and the naval service’s modernization efforts.

The Defense Innovation Roundtable will host 250 guests with representatives from industry, finance, academia, state and federal government, and the U.S. Department of Defense to accelerate the transition of key capabilities from the private sector to the national security sector.

Notable attendees will include Rep. Pat Ryan (D-NY-18); Lt. Gen. David G. Bellon, commanding general of U.S. Marine Corps Forces Reserve and U.S. Marine Corps Forces, South; Col. Matthew C. Swindle, commanding officer of the Marine Innovation Unit; and many others.

• 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. Marine Innovation Unit Activation Ceremony
• 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. Video interviews with USMC personnel
• 4:15 p.m. Departure

• Meet at installation main gate to obtain visitor’s pass and be escorted by U.S. Marine Corps public affairs officer

Who We Are: The United States Marine Corps Reserve is responsible for providing trained units and qualified individuals for mobilization to active duty in time of war, national emergency, and crisis or contingency operations. On a day-to-day basis, Marine Forces Reserve (MARFORRES) consists of a talented and dedicated pool of nearly 100,000 Marines able to augment the Active Component in a myriad of ways, to include operational deployments, support to training, participation in bi/multi-lateral exercises with partner nations and allies, and service-level experimentation in support of Force Design 2030 and refinement of new concepts, tactics, techniques, and procedures.
