Two reserve Marines receive achievement award

Two reserve Marines each received an achievement award at the Wisconsin state capital for their volunteer work Nov. 12.

Staff Sgt. Mark Raymer of Merrill, Wis., and Cpl. Peter Vargo, a native of Marinette, Wis., earned the Wisconsin Military Achievement Award from the Wisconsin State Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.  The Marines were awarded at the Wisconsin State Capitol Rotunda.

“These Marines were nominated for their superior dedication to the Marine Corps’ community relations mission,” said Capt. Tony M. Mitchell, Inspector-Instructor of Det. 1, Bulk Fuel Co. B, 6th Engineering Support Battalion, in Green Bay, Wis. “These two Marines have done countless hours of volunteer work; whether it was for Toys For Tots, the christening of ships or the Birthday Ball, Staff Sgt. Raymer and Cpl. Vargo are two of our “go-to” Marines who are always willing to go that extra mile to get things accomplished.”

The two honorees, however, felt that volunteering was just another day in the line of duty.

"I'm honored," said Vargo, "but I'm no different from any other Marine in my unit. There are lots of other Marines who do exactly what I do."

Raymer echoed Vargo's humility.

“It’s just who I am,” said Raymer. “I never tire of it and enjoy helping people out who are less fortunate. I get involved with whatever I can.”
