NEW ORLEANS -- Despite the government shutdown, Reserve Marines will still have the option to receive medical coverage through the TRICARE Reserve Select Program. TRICARE Reserve Select is a premium-based TRICARE plan that qualified Marines in the Selected Marine Corps Reserve and their families can purchase.
The program provides comprehensive health coverage including: emergency care, outpatient visits, preventive care, hospitalization, maternity care, mental health and prescriptions.
TRICARE has issued a statement about the government shutdown. Reserve Marines and families who normally receive health care in a military medical facility can expect to find reduced hours and a different mix of available services. Families are advised to call for more information or to make an appointment before traveling to a military hospital or clinic for any reason.
“While we can’t predict the exact consequences of a shutdown on every part of our medical health system, we will likely see some impact on the delivery of health care services within our military hospitals and clinics,” said a defense health agency representative in the statement. “The MHS leadership is closely monitoring the impact of a government shutdown on the health services provided to our 9.6 million beneficiaries.”
Should an emergency medical situation arise, TRICARE urges members to immediately call 911 or go to the closest emergency room. If you need further guidance, visit the TRICARE website or call your TRICARE regional contractor.
