New Orleans -- Marine administrative message 521/14 announced the launch of a command-sponsored Lance Corporal Leadership and Ethics Seminar, as well as updates to enlisted professional military education promotion requirements for active and Reserve Marines.
The Lance Corporal Seminar was established by the Marine Corps University at the direction of the Commandant of the Marine Corps and the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps. The goal of the seminar is to enhance small unit leadership and ensure a better understanding of Marine Corps ethos, leadership fundamentals and the total Marine concept. The seminar is to be planned and implemented at the unit level by the command sergeant major or senior enlisted advisor. Seminar size is generally 50 Marines, broken down into five groups of 10 lance corporals, each led by a noncommissioned officer or staff NCO who will facilitate guided discussions.
Prior to attending the seminar, lance corporals must complete the distance education MarineNet "Leading Marines" course. Both “Leading Marines” and the seminar are required in order to be promoted to corporal, effective Oct. 1, 2015.
Units can now download the courseware and seminar guides, which provide instructions on how to conduct the seminar. Registration is also available for regional "teach the teacher" sessions to prepare leaders and directors to conduct seminars within their units.
